Great gig! Rising Sun, Slough on Sat 10th May 08
A thoroughly enjoyable gig from the AbaKus boys on Saturday night (10th May), jammed with full on rock classics but joyfully balanced with up to date chart toppers, seasoned with a hint of the occasional ballad. Disappointed to have missed the first half, I took up prime position to catch the 2nd. This was the first time I have seen the band and I was pleased I dragged myself down the pub in the end!
Great to see effort being put into stage design, with some good use of lights and layout of equipment, lots of colour flooding the performance area, sparkling off the chrome fittings and creating a feeling of atmosphere, I never like to see ambiently lit stage areas, too much like a "bedroom" gig!
Sound was well mixed and set to good volume, although in honesty, I could have personally taken another notch or two on the master volume, but then I do like it loud(er)! Around 10ft+ away from the stage area I found the usually perfect Line 6 amps were sounding a tiny bit too tinny and heavy on the high end and without a full bass enhanced PA system this created a small gap in the sound. It was less noticeable on the more power-rhythm based tracks but switch to solo and it became more apparent. However, this is only a minor point, it was certainly a nice sounding set up, maybe the venue bounced the sound around a bit in this case? Everyone played to a high standard, and I believe my drummer friend who was with me was incredibly turned on by the beautiful DW kit being thumped that night! It certainly looked and sounded the biz, really deep, rocking rhythm!
Material is excellent and well chosen, always a crowd pleaser being played and no selling out to middle of the road chart material or obscure, self indulgent classics, all tracks were appropriate for the venue and seemed carefully chosen for the songs own inherent quality and overall crowd appeal.
Visually the band are interesting, lots of classic rock n roll accessories on lead singer Jay who competently fronts the band with energy and charisma.
Overall, a great night, thanks for keeping me entertained and I'll hopefully catch you guys again in the future! Nice one!
| Graeme Nash, Mon 12th May 08 | |
Reply from AbaKus: thanks Graeme, really appreciate the review! Glad you liked the band - and the lights, it was worth Dave cooking under them then ;o) !!
We are back over there in a few months time (sep 19th) but sometimes Theresa gets is in if she has a cancellation, so if you see us again come and say hello!
cheers! Trish | |
Amazing band play great new venue White Bear, Rickmansworth on Sat 15th Mar 08
The wind and rain didn't stop everyone having a fantastic night at the White Bear - how could it when Abakus are playing?! This is an intriguing pub with a nautical flavour, being next to the Batchworth canal in Rickmansworth. Abakus played there for the first time and got a fantastic reception! They always give over 100% and their set is always intriguing and innovative with new numbers being introduced regularly alongside their core not-to-be-missed numbers that raise the roof and take you to heaven - She Sells Sanctuary, Vertigo, Comfortably Numb, Gimme All Your Lovin' and Rock & Roll which is absolutely out of this world!
Two new numbers they've introduced are Molly's Chambers by the Kings of Leon and Steady As She Goes by the Raconteurs which is hypnotic, steady and pounding and Jay's vocals are even more distinctive than the original.
They are not just a 'covers band', a title (which definitely doesn't do them justice!) and include two original numbers which go down a storm too - It's Not Alright and Take Me To The Top - a real belter in ZZ Top mode!
This is a band who love what they do, put everything into it and always deliver the goods without fail. Come and see them do their own choreography in Sanctuary and you'll see what I mean!
Their musicianship, energy and commitment is out of this world - you'll have an amazing evening each and every time.

Reply from AbaKus: thanks Maggs! Again! It really was a great night - the venue and clientele were great, and I think everyone had a fab time! cheers, trish
lovely pub was packed! The Bell, Stoke Mandeville on Sat 9th Feb 08
Abakus were amazing - the pub was packed and everyone had a whale of a time. There wasn't really much space to dance - but that wasn't going to stop anyone!
This band really know how to whip up a storm and just get better with every gig. Their musicianship is excellent and their choice of songs very wide, all being appreciated for their differences. No set would be complete without Simon's wonderful emotive playing on Comfortably Numb and Jay's superb vocals on She Sells Sanctuary. Their playing on Syd Barrett's Shine On You Crazy Diamond rises to a climax and has become a real crowd pleaser. Dave Carreira (drums) really goes wild and Adam Jones (bass) is right there, providing solid rockin' bass lines to Jay's amazing guitar and vocals and Simon's brilliant guitar licks.
The most recent number to be added is Rock & Roll by Led Zep - you've just GOT to hear this, it's out of this world. Everything they do is first class - don't miss them - they'll be at a venue near you very soon - you'll have the time of your life and come back for more every week - like me!
| maggs, Mon 11th Feb 08 | |
Reply from AbaKus: hi Maggs - thank you! You're very kind! It was a great gig wasnt it?! We were quite overwhelmed by the amount of peole who had come just to see us! Just so as you know, the Shine On Song is actually by Pink Floyd, and is about Syd Barrett... glad you like it so much, it does go down well though!
Making History The Pheasant, Tring on Sat 1st Dec 07
Those of us who regularly cross several Shires to enjoy what these guys give us, are never disappointed but on this occasion, history was made.
At the conclusion of yet another virtuoso performance of the Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" - one of the band's most oft-requested covers - drummer Dave Carera, burst a drum! For him, it was the first time ever in 25 years of playing... Fortunately, he carries spares and the skin was replaced with barely a missed beat!
Due to the time of year the crowd was smaller than usual on this occasion but the lack of numbers did not curb the enthusiasm of the greatly appreciative audience. The band, as always, gave their all for us and for love of the music - our thanks to them and the Landlords of all venues where live music is played - we can never get enough!

[Tue 15th Apr 08] Hi to everyone and here's the news Hi All,
First we would like to say a big thank - you to all that came to the Mermaid in St Albans and the Welly in Watford last weekend, 11th and 12th April. We had a brilliant time at both of these gigs and hope you did too!
We are going into the studio next week to record a cd - 8 or so songs that we use as both an ep and also pick a few tracks from for a new demo, so we are really looking forward to that - and so's Trish as she will soon have a half decent demo to send out! ;o)
Thats it for now and we all really hope to see you at a gig soon...
Cheers, AbaKus | |
