The Acoustic Lounge[Acoustic]
The Acoustic LoungeThe Acoustic Lounge mixes the cream of established acts together with one-off collaborations to make a space in which to sit back and relax, soaking up the fresh sounds of the very best contemporary roots music.

Since 2003 we have presented more than 20 of the very best local musical talents, both young and... well, experienced. But one things remains consistent - the high quality of all the music. Come along to see one band and you'll walk away a fan of at least a couple more. Musicians are often inspired, music lovers are always entertained.

The Acoustic Lounge is run by the music scene for the music scene on a not-for-profit basis in order to give local acoustic musicians access to a professional Arts Theatre and also to give the good public of the area a chance to see classy music in a classy venue.

Each evening features four bands for less than you'd normally pay to see just one at this dedicated venue. You'd certainly be hard pushed to find a better value night, and the auditorium and foyer are non-smoking (but alcohol is readily available at the bar!).

Vote with your feet and support The Acoustic Lounge, it's there for you to enjoy!

Good music, poor venue Maltings Arts Theatre, St Albans on Sat 17th Sep 05
Maltings Arts Theatre's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. I enjoy acoustic roots but I had no idea who was playing tonight, and I was not disappointed, as it was Steve 'Sassa' Sumner and Darren Millard, masquerading as 'The Loki Project', two brilliant singer/songwriters with strong vocals and dual guitars, a bit like Turin Brakes with lovely harmonies and nice lead acoustic guitar from Steve. But how were we supposed to know who they were? There was nothing on any web site to tell us. I enjoyed all the music tonight, especially Graham Robins and Andy Driver, but, again - how is anybody supposed to know it was them playing? The sound was restrained and distant which for acoustic guitars and vocals was not fitting and detracted, I felt, from the energy that the musicians were putting in.

A sparse attendance, with only about 60 seats out of 200 filled. If I was in charge, I would be worried. And if I was a musician who played last night, I'd be pretty p*ssed off.

Another Acoustic Delight Maltings Arts Theatre, St Albans on Sat 17th Sep 05
Maltings Arts Theatre's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. As someone who has been to every Acoustic Lounge it was of no surprise that yet again John and Bill had pulled off another eclectic mix of 4 bands for the rock bottom price of £7.50 or £6.50 if you got them in advance.

All four bands on the night did good performances. The Loki Project (Sassa and Darren Millard), the soulful Graham Robins, Roland 'Guitar Master' Chadwick and the evening was topped off with The Legion Of Filth. As always every one did a good job and the crowd of just over a hundred (yes I counted them and I was sober!) was entertained. Some minor quibbles with the sound here and there but all in all pretty good.

I know the front of house staff at the box office and bar did a superb job as usual and £180 + worth of the acts CDs were bought so the audience must have liked what they heard. All the artists I spoke to after the show were very happy.

Next time I'm sure things will be even better and as people often forget, this is like mini festival on your doorstep, so open your mind and go along.
