Robins/Ridley success Graham Robins on Thu 5th Jul 07
Graham Robins's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. rated as one of our top reviews Last night I had the pleasure to witness Graham Robins and Pete Ridley supporting Seth Lakeman at the Alban Arena.

The duo had a potentially difficult task in front of them, supporting as they were the current 'flavour of the folk-month', and yet more than rose to the occasion.

Attendance at the gig was generally a bit low (either the weird weather, worse-than-usual Thameslink problems or other St Albans Festival events on that night preventing lots from coming) and those that were there were either dotted around the cavernous Arena floor or sitting in the balcony a long way from the stage.

The duo came on with a calm and experienced manner and instantly took control of the stage space. Seated in an intimate manner normally befitting a much smaller venue, they soon greeted the crowd and launched into the first tune. After just a few bars, many of the audience drew closer to better see and hear what the pair were doing.

With his commanding voice and stage presence, excellently complemented by Pete's measured and tasteful guitar playing, Graham knocked out a splendid set of soulful tunes and stories set to music. "Tom Hamilton's Blues", a tale of the last pony express rider and his relevance to today's world, in particular stood out.

Their set was unfortunately cut short by ten minutes (as Seth had to get back to Devon early that night for some unexplained reason and wanted to go on that much earlier!) which definitely left the crowd wanting more from Robins and Ridley.

Go see them wherever and whenever you can!

Impressed St Albans Rocks on Thu 13th Jul 06
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. Went to the gig and was impressed by some of the bands. Unfortunately I think the price of the tickets was too high which reflected in poor turnout. Why hadn't the advertisers done more to promote it? Didn't hear anything on local radio. Imperial Vipers were brilliant - what a shame the evening was running late by the time they finally came on and they had to cut short a great performance. Cat also impressed but had to cut short their slot.

You will need to improve if it's going to be a yearly event but on the whole great night. Pity there were no seats in the arena performance area and you couldn't get to the balcony!

St Albans rocked! St Albans Rocks on Thu 13th Jul 06
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. Went along to the St Albans Rocks Thursday and shame it ran late and the Imperial Vipers had to cut their set short as they were by far the best, followed by Cat who did a good show also. You should have made the earlier bands do a bit less and also the tickets were expensive - even students only got a few quid off. Too many staff milling around doing nothing and drinks a bit pricey. Otherwise a good night had by all.

Tricky St Albans Rocks on Thu 13th Jul 06
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. We enjoyed the bands, especially ex Sex Pistol Glen Matlock who had loads of charisma, armed with just one acoustic guitar. Paul Watson made a fine show with delectable harmonies from Sara. The rock bands were variable in quality - some fine jazz/groove rock from My Pet Junkie and precision rock from Cat. Where was the bass guitar in the mix though?

There was some very listenable jazz in the foyer, with guitars and bass, courtesy of Acoustic Jazz Implosion.

Bands apart, the Arena was not that busy, the bar well staffed (but they ran out of beer - duh). Oh, and the tickets said 8pm, so some of us missed the first few acts, because apparently it started at 7.
