Area 52[Function Band, 10 piece]
Area 52Lively ten piece function band with both professional, and semi professional musicians, now in its 8th year as a gigging entity, providing a mix of classic sounds. A Hedonistic experience Shillingford Village Hall, Tiverton on Sat 8th Dec 07

Tickets were available after a 6 month wait for an Area 52 gig which was actually open to all! Most gigs are apparently private affairs so the opportunity of seeing this excellent 10 piece band is at present a rare event. Hopefully this will change!

The venue was already rockin to the sounds of Area 52, a 10 piece big band with loud sounds, comprising three vocalists, a three piece horn section and very tight back line with drums, bass, keys and guitar.

It was quite obvious from the start that this was no ordinary 'run of the mill' band. Being a great lover of music from Pavarotti to Coldplay, Led Zep to Krauss and having seen the regular 'Ginger Hitlas' and 'Man From Funkle' set ups and similar in the south west, this particular band Area 52 have something more than a bit special to offer! Dynamics, timbre, and rhythm blended into one fantastic sound. ("Try a little tenderness", "Mustang Sally"). A mix of soul, funk, ska and blues with some brilliantly remastered added extras, (which you will have to find about for yourself, coz I ain't giving all their secrets away). Area 52, are if you get the rare opportunity to see them, a band not to be missed.

So what's the verdict ? Middle of the road ? Nah! Good , Nah! Excellent? Yes! Plus some. Full on, professional, and polished, Area 52 are as sensuously pleasurable as a top quality Cabernet Sauvignon who slide effortlessly into a fusion of sassy, skillful, sexy, slinkissimo sounds.
They are loud, proud, and without a doubt stand out from the crowd. Spine tinglingly good from head to toe.

absolutely fantastic Porlock Recreation Ground, Minehead on Sat 15th Sep 07
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. What an absolutely fantastic band.

We were at a friend's wedding reception and thought we were in for the same old boring disco, but what a surprise we had when Area 52 came to life.

There wasn't any room on the dance floor all night, not a duff note played or sung. It's restored our faith in live gigs.

For me the best song was Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop". Not a song I've heard covered before but was performed brilliantly and a hit with all.

If you are looking for a professional band, a varied repertoire, excellent vocals and musicians and of course loads a fun, AREA 52 is for you!

Let your hair down Oswestry Showground, Oswestry on Sun 26th Aug 07
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. rated as one of our top reviews I went to see these guys from Somerset at a biker rally in Shropshire. The well oiled crowd... leather clad, hairy, chain swinging monsters that we were, aren't known as the fellers to sell short on... believe me, and Area 52 had to shine like chrome or crash and burn.

And shine they did. Pure gold.

With lead vocals provided by a guy with a great voice and engaging presence, he really involved us in the music, accompanied by two brilliant and very appealing female singers. Area 52 launched into their first set and didn't let us off the dance floor until well past bedtime.

This band doesn't do routine. They delivered an original and heartfelt punch with each song, the brass section well up for strutting their stuff, and interjecting with searing 3 part harmonies. Irresistible! The keys, guitars, drums... everyone let rip with energy, absolute commitment and professionalism.

The whole band was tight, the sound well managed (I think they had a pro company in) and there was a good mix of soul, ska, funk & rock n roll.

Go and see this band if they play near you... and really let your hair down.

A night to remember Forde Hall Social Club, Newton Abbot on Fri 17th Aug 07
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. The event was my 50th birthday. I'm not normally one to throw a party but this year I decided to make an effort & really push the 'boat out' for the 'Big 5 - 0'!

I've worked in the music industry off and on since I was 14 and have always loved live music, so from the start booking the right bands was important, key even in my mind to successfully organising a really good party.

That's why I called Bob of Area 52 who I have known for some years now.

I have seen them lift the mood of many an audience at parties, wedding receptions, even biker rallies(!) with their consistently professional, stylish & charismatic performances.

For this reason they were my first choice as the last act for my party, so that we could dance the night away in style to a string of personal favourites & classics ranging from "Mustang Sally" & "I Feel Good" to "One Step Beyond" & "Great Balls Of Fire".

This was my big party so I wanted the best party band around, I got them & they delivered, They developed a good rapport with the audience straight away & maintained it till the end of the last note. They had a fantastic full sound, not too loud but they certainly rocked! It was a night I will never forget & their performance was a big part of that! They really were excellent. Thank you Area 52!

(click for larger picture) Sampler A and B

In 2003, the Band line up had changed, with 5 new faces since the Juicy Sond-Bites Cd had been produced. It was decided to record 11 tracks in one weekend to try and update the recordings we were sending out, and to reflect how the line up had altered. A trip to Sprint Studios, just outside of Street in Somerset, produced what we wanted. The tracks were then divided up between two CD's, very unimaginatively titled Sampler A and Sampler B. These were sent out to people interested in booking the Band, and, handed out at gigs. The packaging and image wasn't well thought out but the Cd's brought the work in.
Tracks included;
Gimme' Some Lovin'
Respect
Black Velvet
Midnight Hour
Try A Little Tenderness
Bond Theme (Instr)
Special Brew
I Don't Want A Lover
I Wish
It Takes Two
Hot Stuff
(click for larger picture) 3 1/2 Years Of Making Music

In April 2004, two new vocalists had recently joined the Band which now had 10 members. A trip to MTM studios was arranged so that a couple of new songs could be recorded which would reflect the new front line. The upshot of this was this Cd. Something of a compilation of the 3 1/2 years that the Band had been running. Two tracks were taken from each of the first and second recordings, and four added from the latest visit. 3 months later, two live recordings were added after the Band's appearance at the Newt Beer Festival.
Tracks;
1. Soul Man
2. Knock On Wood
3. Try A Little Tenderness
4. These Boots Are Made For Walking
5. Disco Inferno
6. I Feel Good
7. Respect
8. I Only Want To Be With You
9. Flip Flop Fly (Live at the Newt)
10. Great Balls Of Fire (Live at the Newt)
