Bag of Rats
Scurrying from the Somerset and Dorset area of the West Country comes a flurry of rats; in fact, the Bag of Rats. The band consists of: John Archer (flute, harmonica, percussion and vocals), Mike Hall (guitar, mandola, vocals and songwriter), Mary Gilmour (melodeons and Queen Rat) and Simon Hester (violin, pretend banjo and Hero). All four had played in various kinds of bands over the years and came together in 2005 with a view to forming a band which could combine their individual musical experience. The result is a rich brew of Traditional English, Blues, Irish, Jazz and Country; a smidgeon of Ska, a hint of alternative and a peppering of psychedelic skiffle; in a nutshell, Verminous Folk!
In 2006, they played at music clubs such as Milverton Music Club and Nova Scotia; Wessex, Wimborne and Burnham on Sea Folk Festivals; plus many pub bookings. 2007 saw them appearing at all the Folk Festivals again and were also snapped up to play the Avalon stage at Glastonbury Festival! They have headlined at the Ritz Acoustic Club in Burnham on Sea, and played the Saturday night at Minehead Beer Festival (very fitting; for the Rats and Beer go together well!). They have been rebooked by most of the places that saw them in 2006 and 2007 plus new ones. They always prove popular with audiences that they entertain and look like continuing to do so. 2008 looks set to be a very busy year including supporting 3 Daft Monkeys and Hobo Jones & the Junkyard Dogs. In 2007, they have produced a CD 'Abbey Rodent', eight scrummy examples of the Rat sound; this is on sale at gigs or online.

 The energy and artistic talent of this band is terrific. It's live and happening. I don't know whether it should be called 'folk' as the influences are so many. If you want a kicking party-time band - this is it. My boyfriend has taken to following them around which worried me a bit but I understand now. Cool. | |
