Barry Reeves[Acoustic Blues, Folk & Rock, Solo Artist]
Barry ReevesBarry Reeves plays acoustic blues bottleneck style, acoustic rock and acoustic folk styles. He is a very good guitarist.

He sings with a fine and versatile voice and writes most of his own songs. His voice is the perfect foil for his songs which are stirring, sensitive, satirical or poignant. They linger in the mind like classics to challenge the listener or free their emotion.

Also he plays his own versions of Robert Johnson and other blues classics with the feel and energy that they deserve.

With very few exceptions he does not play covers. He writes his own excellent songs.

12345678910 7 votes average 7.00
Notes from Barry Reeves: "A 12 bar blues about wandering around the South Hams area of Devon with the lady you love. South Hams, west of Exeter and East of Brixham was once poor but now the home of the wealthy. Simple, yet gently erotic and suggests a secluded summer evening by the warm sea. Played in Open D on a Fylde Goodfellow with a brass bottleneck and recorded live."

12345678910 3 votes average 8.00
Notes from Barry Reeves: "A song about being let down by a lover. Works best as an acoustic rock song, played in Dm with a very good show stopping solo between verses 3 and 4 and at the end. Goes down very well in a pub setting. The lyrics let me sing with all the anger of a frustrated man with the music being a perfect match."
Get the Flash Player (and enable JavaScript) to listen to this MP3. Original Demo 3 : Please Take Care [Acoustic Guitar]
12345678910 3 votes average 6.67
Notes from Barry Reeves: "We love people in different ways. This song is about that. Lovers, children, friends and the deceased all feature in a song that is thoughtful and poignant. Skillful guitar playing meets lyrics that caress the soul sung with a lovers touch."

Great music, odd place The PumpHouse Arts Centre, Watford on Tue 31st Jul 07
The PumpHouse Arts Centre's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. Barry played the Pumphouse as his first visit there. He brought his new partner and a single guitar, a very nice Fylde cutaway acoustic.

He played all sorts of styles: Bottleneck blues in both open D and open G, rock songs in conventional tuning and folk songs in conventional tuning often I noticed with a dropped 'D'.

This showed his total intimacy with his guitar, tuning between songs and playing a traditional English Folk song straight after the Robert Johnson bottleneck classic 'Crossroad Blues'. And he can sing. The voice fitted the song: angry for 'Natalie', mellow for 'Martyrs Bay' and insistent for 'Sweet Home Chicago'.

He really is very very good, and as we discussed afterwards on a cold Watford High Station, his only problem is that he is too creative. He writes his own songs and many venues want only people who play covers.

But the venue. Friendly indeed but the quality control of the floor spots was non existent and Barry's partner, who has asked not to be named here, was harassed by some men every time she visited the ladies'. She never wants to go there again. And the audience at the Pumphouse talk a great deal.

So Barry Reeves was good in every way, playing to an audience who talked through his songs then applauded wildly after each one. And all this for free... he even had to buy his own beer.

Reply from Barry Reeves: True about my lady and the strange men hanging about the ladies' loo. No way to treat a lady, nor indeed any woman. Thanks for the kind comments.
The very versatile Barry Reeves Wealdstone Methodist Church, Wealdstone on Mon 19th Mar 07
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. rated as one of our top reviews Wealdstone Womens Fellowship is a small group of women, mostly of advanced years. They were very friendly and old enough to remember the blues and a classic Beatles track ('I Will'). Having heard Barry bring the house down several times at The Horns in Watford I wondered how he would fare in this very different atmosphere.

He was brilliant. Superb in all ways. The small audience loved how he introduced each song with honest wit and humour. There was an intimacy which allowed us to hear the full power and quality of his fine voice; to enjoy the complicated fingerstyle playing, or the stunning bottleneck blues playing. New to me was the fine harp playing on the very catchy 'Can't Get Enough of You': a song about finding love in old age.

The lyrics of Barry's songs are so good. 'Please Take Care' is a poignant song about different aspects of love. 'Let's fall in love' is a song about being lonely while hoping for love to come your way. 'The River Flows' reflects on the mystery of the natural world.

Barry loves playing, and is at home to an audience of a few hundred as he was here to an audience of a few. He plays and sings very well. If you can get him to play, do so. If you can get to hear him then make the journey.

Reply from Barry Reeves: Thank you Music Fan. It was a good gig to do, with more emphasis on folk than rock but I am delighted that you enjoyed it.
Rain rain go away Harrow Heritage Centre, Harrow on Sun 26th Nov 06
Harrow Heritage Centre's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. On a wet Sunday lunchtime I wandered into the park in Harrow where sits the restored barn. As I got closer to the entrance hoping to buy a cup of coffee inside I heard the sound of Robert Johnson's 'Sweet Home Chicago' played with soaring bottleneck guitar and sung with an invitational voice which was almost seductive. This at lunch time too! Thus I first heard Barry Reeves.

Considering the total lack of advertising of events at the Heritage Centre at this time, 15 people on a soggy Sunday was no more than could be expected for his 90 minute set. But nobody left, a few people wandered in out of the rain and stayed, and when he asked if he could continue a little after the official 2pm closing time the staff readily agreed! By this time there were 20 people listening.

He writes most of his own songs which go from the angry hurt lover 'Natalie' which is pure rock and roll; Sleep in Peace and Beauty, a folk style love song (or adult lullaby as he calls it) and What Do You Think We Get Elected For? which he played as a folk blues with a bottleneck solo. The suggestion that people today get elected to fight wars seems fair enough to me.

We had a friendly chat at the end of the gig and I've used my notes for this review. A charming man who deserves better than a wet November lunchtime to play his music.

[Sat 5th Apr 08] The second meeting of the Pinn... The second meeting of the Pinner Acoustic Folk and Blues Club is on 10th April at the Pinner Village Hall lounge from 8pm.

This is in Chapel Lane Pinner , easily reached from the Met line station and the H11, H12, H13 and 183 bus routes which run through Pinner. There is also a big car park: free at that time of evening.

The first meeting was a total success. 15 or so people turned up, about half sang while the others listened. It was a very good 2 1/4 hours.

Do come along if you can.

Barry
