The Black LionClaiming to be England's oldest pub site (experts have excavated a Roman malting oven and a wall which indicate there was an ale house on the site between 60AD and 250ad), The Black Lion is an attractive feature of a street where bustling coaching inns once offered a welcome halt and a reviving glass of ale for bone-weary travellers jolting in and out of London. Well, we're still bone-weary in 21st Century St Albans, and we still need that ale... come and listen to some good local music here soon!

Bueno! Swanvesta Social Club on Wed 2nd Jul 08
Swanvesta Social Club's pageReview NOT edited by Lemonrock - original text Visited the St.Michaels Festival in St.Albans and had a delightful evening - dipping into various pubs and watching the street performances. Saw a large crowd in the car park of The Black Lion and was drawn in by the sound of this crazy Latin band. Ended up staying for two hours and dancing with a bunch of ladies I'd never met before! Had an absolute ball. Must commend them on the quality and energy of their performance. Entertainment at its best. Well done Swanvestas.

Excellent gig! The Short Stories on Sun 3rd Feb 08
The Short Stories's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. I have seen these guys play before but have to say this was my favourite gig to date.

The surroundings of the newly refurbed Black Lion made a lovely backdrop for these two very talented blokes, plus a couple of guest singers.

I hope they get to play here again as I really enjoyed the atmosphere. They played a real mixture of songs including The Killers, U2, The Kooks and much much more. And they played for a good 3 hours, no one wanted them to leave.
Go see them!

Great band not sure about the venue The Natalies on Fri 1st Jun 07
The Natalies's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. We were new to 'The Natalies' although we'd seen the drummer play in other bands before. The Natalies played a great set with some real surprises in there, nothing predictable and every song was a surprise. The sound balance was great and the addition of keyboards to a band really showed through - I won't forget hearing that Buggles song and not believing my ears!

The band put a lot of effort in, and it shows - the singer and drummer looked ready to combust, but the sound was great and all of the band are obviously accomplished musicians.

Even though there was football and the pub resembled a building site, the band did well to keep a crowd who all enjoyed the music as much as us.

The only shame was hearing some of the hotel residents complain, leading to the band being denied an encore. I think this is a shame and not the band's fault - what are they to do if booked to play in a pub/hotel. We didn't think them too loud, but it seems silly for the band to attract noise complaints if the venue books a band whilst guests are present.

We'll be following The Natalies and hope to see them in another St Albans pub again in the near future.

Great Night Deaf Shepherd on Sat 28th Jan 06
Deaf Shepherd's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page.  This was a great night, started with great aplomb but the Box of Frogs who got everyone's feet tapping with some great Rock and Blues standards!

After what seemed an eternity, Deaf Shepherd took the stage and blew it apart. This was only the third time that I've seen the band who seem to have a different lineup for each gig! Tonight they had a total of THREE guitarists with a bassplayer and drummer and I loved every minute of it!

The highlight for me was the encore, I missed the name but the solos really showed the class of the two lead guitarists and the stunning drum and bass work was a treat to send us all back out into the cold night, ears ringing but very happy. Would recommend.
