The real thing! Waggon & Horses, Watton-at-Stone on Fri 17th Nov 06
Astonishing technical skill is the first thing that struck me and probably the majority of the audience when the band went through their set list of blues/rock covers. As well as the undoubted skills of mainman Julian (Jules) on guitars and vocals, the rhythm section of drummer Paul and bassist Steve dazzled too, with an unusually tight stops and starts on the kit and exciting use of slides and the upper fretboard on the six-string bass. Normally this would have been enough, but they were also joined on stage by a very beautiful sax player who was initially introduced as Jules' sister-in-law. This woman could PLAY and turned out to be Sandra Grant (www.lemonrock.com/sandragrant), a professional sax player with her own album coming out soon.
A great evening with a well-balanced sound (even though I was only sitting feet away from the band) and all of the band played in a completely professional way!

Reply from Blind Drunk Jules: Paul, thank you so much for your kind words, we're glad that you had a good time.
For those of you that don't know, Paul is bassist with The Fridge Magnates, check them out here on Lemonrock. While we love and appreciate any good review, to receive such a review from a gigging musician is very special indeed, it makes all the difference.
BDJ has been involved with recording Sandra Grant's new album, and Paul's right, she is a wonderful musician and writer. The CD is nearly finished.
Brilliant! Plinston Hall, Letchworth on Fri 19th May 06
This is the first time I'd seen BDJ in action, this time doing a short set of blues-rock in support of Numen. As a showcase for Mr Carter's awesome chops, the band and the material were absolutely right up my street. Armed and dangerous with a sunburst Strat, not to mention a great singing voice, Julian is the Real Deal. The band together are tight, drilled and eminently professional, while still managing to sound fresh and spontaneous.
And speaking of sound, the sound quality was about the best I've heard anywhere. And I've been to a gig or three in my time.
As I said, this was only a short support set. Major priority now is to check out a full gig at the earliest opportunity. I strongly advise you to do the same.

Reply from Blind Drunk Jules: Blimey, what a nice chap you are, thank you. I'm blushing!
I really enjoyed this BDJ gig, everything felt and sounded just right. Funny you should mention the sound, 'cos the PA was a mixture of my old PA, my new PA and friend's PA (Plinston is a large room!) all wired together and mixed from the stage. We can't afford a sound man! Watch this space for future full BDJ gigs.
blistering set Caddington Sports & Social Club, Luton on Wed 28th Dec 05
"Blind Drunk Jules" blew the cobwebs away at the Caddington Sports Club bar last night with a blistering set of Blues standards and other classics from Clapton, Gary Moore, Santana, Robert Johnson, Cream, Steely Dan and more.
Sporting an impressive array of PRSi (SCT and HB1) and Strats (Pangborne and Fender), Jules' fluid playing and spot on vocals led the power trio through a most excellent, crowd pleasing set. Steve "Fingerz" on six string bass (!) provided a solid melodic backdrop, while Paul on drums was steady as a rock.
So... pay attention at the back there.....JULES ROCKS!!
Catch them at Halley's Comet, Bradwell Road, Bradville, MK13 7AW on New Year's Eve. 9pm start.

| | She'll Blow Your Mind, With Jazz In Blues
This is really an album by Sandra Grant, with Blind Drunk Jules as her backing band, particularly "Fingerz" Carty who played bass, keyboards, and guitar, as well as producing the album. He did a great job, it sounds really good. Sandra Grant wrote the songs. She also sang, played alto & tenor sax, and flute. |
