| | Allan Taylor Allan Taylor's songs are written from a lifetime of travelling; always the observer passing through, each song is a vignette of life, like a story told over a drink in a bar; characters come to life like people you know and places become as familiar as if you had been there. His songs have been recorded by more than a hundred other performers of various nationalities proof enough that a concert by Allan Taylor will be an experience to remember. As Allan says at the beginning of each concert, "Sit back and enjoy the journey." 8pm - 11pm singer-songwriter £TBC |

Bit Different Stuart O'Connor on Fri 20th Jul 07
I came along to this gig not really knowing what to expect, not knowing who was playing, but having heard through the grapevine that Stuart O' Connor's band "My Pet Junkie" had made some waves playing Paignton last year. Most of the acts I've seen there in the past have been rather more established but these two were just as good as the signed acts.
Stuart O' Connor had some interesting textures to his guitar work, unusual tunings and some good songs - "Designed to Stop" standing out in particular. Aussie Paul Green was very chilled and experienced and complemented Stuart's style well. Nice to see them getting together for the encore. Good music, good vibe - might even be encouraged to broaden my tastes a little!

bad weather, great music Peter Bruntnell on Fri 19th May 06
Torquay was doing its best to show off its bad side, in terms of the weather, as it felt like the monsoon season when going to the venue. However when I got there the venue was intimate and friendly. I soon settled in with the famous banana beer which Peter Bruntnell also through the night took a great liking to. It certainly lubricated his music as he delivered an excellent set suited to the intimate set up as it is at the Blue Walnut. He covered most of the albums he has done and finished with a couple of popular cover versions with an old pal called 'smudger' on the fiddle. The support act was also well worth coming to see and shows much promise. Also the sound quality was just right for a small space where it could be overpowering.

Walnut cracker! Quiet Loner on Sat 17th Sep 05
This was my first visit to The Blue Walnut and not being familiar with the material of Quiet Loner, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, any misgivings were swept away on entering this wonderful little venue with its intimate, candle lit ambience, which turned out to be the perfect setting for what was to come.
Quiet Loner, aka Manchester-based singer-songwriter Matt Hill, has an engaging, relaxed style with interesting and often humourous between-song chat which belies the often intense nature of his lyrics, dealing as they do with tales of heartbreak, illicit liaisons and execution(!) Such subjects could easily lead to depressing songs of self-pity and bitterness but for someone usually cast as an Americana/Alt. Country artist, Matt Hill avoids this by employing wit and irony in an distinctly English way.
In the absence of a support act, Matt played three sets, holding the attention of the two dozen packed into the Cafe throughout - no mean feat for a solo acoustic performer playing songs with which probably most people present were unfamiliar. It came as no surprise to learn that his 2004 album 'Secret Ruler of the World' was voted Album of the Year on the Americana-UK website. Highlights for me were the song about the last request of condemned murderer Gary Gilmour - 'Get me Johnny Cash on the Phone' and the twisted S & M saga, 'Henri'.
A hugely enjoyable evening; I will be return - and so too, hopefully, will Quiet Loner.

| Print Flyers | |
|
|
|
| Print 3 flyers per A4 page, with marked cutting guides. Hint: setting your start date to the first of a month, and your end date to the last day of a month, gives a neat heading on your flyer, e.g. setting 1 May 2008 and 31 Aug 2008 as the start and end dates will produce the heading: 'MAY - AUGUST 08'. Try it! You can also set the font size to a decimal value (e.g. 9.3) to make the gigs fit exactly onto the page. | |
| Flyers limited to 14 days. Get longer flyers by joining Lemonrock - FREE Music Lover membership! | |
