Top night, but new faces needed Bovey Acoustic Jam on Thu 17th May 07
As my American friend who joined me at a recent Bovey Acoustic Jam said "Now this is what I'm talking about".
A well run session by Rocking Johnny produced a range of good acts from the bedroom guitarist to some seasoned old pros - no offence Weller!)
The sound was difficult to manage with the comings and goings of various instruments but overall the vibe was excellent. The only slightly blue note is that the 'jam' has started to resemble the 'Bilbo' show.
OK he is the local hero and his version of 'Willin' is A one, but a surfeit of him and overlong sets by one or two of the 'in crowd' is starting to stifle the event.
New talent was lurking in the wings (Francine for one) but was sadly overlooked apart from the Dutch feller with the beat up guitar and dodgy socks and sandals ensemble. And those blokes who came from Hampshire deserved another song at least.
Overall though well worth a visit and best of all it's free.
Best wishes to the Fat Bloke who is sorely missed by all.

Jeez Bovey Acoustic Jam on Thu 15th Mar 07
Last few months jams at the Bell Inn have been... well kinda... great. There's a whole bunch of jam sessions going on at many venues around Devon (and Cornwall) which is a great move to get folks out the closet.
But the standard of stuff at the Bell Inn jam sessions has just been getting better and better and no two nights this year have been the same with loads of different styles coming out from Gypsy jazz and old time country and bluegrass stuff to some of the local artists adding anything from original tunes or straight covers to off the cuff jamming (i.e. "what the hell key are we in" jazz) It's also important to note that these sessions still make room for the non-gig-hardened and unseasoned players and the younger folks who also get a slot to show off their hidden talents and even show the older hands a thing or six!!
Credit to all involved...... and.....
...in particular many many thanks to Martin and John for all the hard work behind the scenes to make it happen. Someone has to lug the PA out the shed into the car and wire it all up - and get a sound that everyone does justice to the musos who do their thing...
A guy from Slovakia (a guitar player no less) who happened to be over here working for the week and just happened to drop into the Bell at last nights jam was just amazed at what he heard.
So here's a vote of thanks to these guys for making it happen, and the effort Martin has put into getting the Bovey Acoustic jam on the map (Many folks who turn up these days have found out about it from www.lemonrock.com). Thanks also to Keith and Sandra for hosting and providing the sandwiches which go down a treat when I've missed dinner to get to the jam.
Thanks again everyone - very much appreciated

Reply from Bovey Acoustic Jam: Thanks, Brian. We're well chuffed that so many brilliant players in so many different styles keep turning up, but equally we're pleased that these players are as keen as we are to encourage the people who are just starting out or are very nervous about performing. Thanks to all of you for helping getting people involved in making music together. BTW: what key WERE we in?!
Patience is a virtue! Bovey Acoustic Jam on Thu 20th Jul 06
This was the night Country John died and went to Heaven. We were joined by Derek and Damian who provided blistering bluegrass whenever the rest of us ran out of ideas. The audience loved them (as did we - we hope they'll be back regularly).
Another blow-in was Martin Weller (who told us he'd seen our entry in Lemonrock :-) -see his entry - we'll be visiting one of his gigs soon) who showed us how professionals do it !! Another professional, but a bit more of a regular, Bill Birks was in John Martyn mode for a couple of excellent covers. We'll be sawing his leg off when we work out which one is appropriate . . .
Feedback from the night so far has been 100% positive, from Martin Weller's blog on Lemonrock (thanks, Martin - we're proud to be your first blog entry) to the other players, to the owner of the local Deli when I called in this morning.
John and I had no idea how these evening would be received. We have to say that we've been amazed by the depth of talent that has turned up each month. Thank you all.
Let's make the next one even better! All (musical) talent welcomed - whatever style, so long as it's acoustic.
