The Cheats Rock The Plume of Feathers, Little Wymondley on Sat 14th Apr 07
Kicking off with the punchy powerchords of The Who's "I Can't Explain" the band eased into a set list that read like an A-Z of rock classics.
One thing that became apparent very quickly was that these guys can really play. One of the issues with playing classic songs is that the audience usually know them too well. So a note missed during, for example, the solo in "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" really stands out. Not so tonight. Martin nailed each familiar riff and famous solo. He is such a perfectionist he even switched to a re-tuned Telecaster for Brown Sugar (a la Keef Richards). Another issue with covers can be the vocals - after a spot on intro to "All Right Now" you expect Paul Rodgers to come thundering in, right? Well Steve doesn't disappoint with a powerful rock voice (with a touch of soul) and puts his own style and delivery on a song. You could even mistake him for a "good 'ol boy" during "Sweet Home Alabama" which was delivered full on, with the audience singing in full voice. The rhythm section of John and Jim are rock solid throughout the night and they make it look so easy! Jim providing some very effective backing vocal harmonies and taking lead vocals on a tight performance of "Take It Easy" and a great rendition of The Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down". What else? Well, throw in a Pink Floyd medley, an acoustic set (great version of "That's Entertainment" with John on acoustic bass), "Message In A Bottle" (nailed!), a bunch of other well delivered classics - mix this in with a good crowd, a landlord and landlady who are up for a good time (hope the footprints on the tables polish out!) and a few "lemonades" (!) and you end up with a thoroughly enjoyable night. Look out for The Cheats - you won't be disappointed!
