Geist[Pop/Rock/Acoustic, 5 piece]
GEIST
John McDevitt - Vocals, Guitar, Songwriter Terry Hughes - Bass Neill Tupman - Guitar, Vocals Anna Jenkins - Violin, Vocals Stuart Francis - Drums, Vocals Dave Coston - Geist Session Pianist Dominic Hudson - Songwriter
Geist is a 5-piece independent band (formed in 2002, 2003, 2004 and finally in 2005) describable as 'pop-rock' for want of a pigeon-hole of their own. They could be a six or seven-piece band if you included the other writer - Dominic Hudson and our personal session piano player - Dave Coston, who fits Geist in where he can.
In 2003 Geist released Songs For Your Neighbour featuring only two of the current line-up (John and Neill), and were asked to provide a theme tune for the Channel 5/Eye Film & TV programme A Different Life, which has been BAFTA nominated and is now in its 3rd series (and commissioned for a 4th). Incidental music in the programme has been taken from Songs for Your Neighbour. Geist, as they are now, have been together since May 2005 and formed around Songs For Your Neighbour; Anna Jenkins joined in 2004 during her last year at Trinity Music College, and Stuart Francis and Terry Hughes after hearing the 1st album.
Songs For Your Neighbour sold through the Unsigned...AS YET! section on CD-Wow, remaining in the Top Ten for over 2 years. Since this section is now being wound down, it is now selling through cdbaby.
Decreasing Circles, was released on 14 February 2006, and is being sold through CD-Wow and amazon.co.uk.
Geist - n. spirit; intellectual capacity or bent. Freedom or self-contained existence; freedom designated as ability to self-direct.

Geistzeit! The White Lion, St Albans on Tue 5th Sep 06
Tuesday night at the White Lion is a good gig; bands are always musically intelligent, original in their selections, and excellent in their execution. Every now and then we get a real blitzer, like Geist. Their repertoire is entirely original and perfect pop, based on smart writing and really CUTE arrangement - so cute that it doesn't show. They just seem to be up there having fun and putting out a show and making you watch and smile and tap your foot, and then you realise the calculation that's gone into the instrumentation of every song, the restraint of good musicians who know they can't ad-lib when they are filling or counterpointing... great dynamic balance. Solos? Yeah, got them too! But all so melodic.
Influences you can detect? EVERY great British band of the last ten years. Name yours, they're in there.
There was actually a queue to buy their CD, Decreasing Circles, after the gig, and it proves to be a real reflection of the stage performance. Polished, intelligent, interesting. Buy two (just in case you lend one).

Unforgettable album launch The White Lion, St Albans on Tue 14th Feb 06
Went to see Geist on their album launch at White Lion and it was worth the journey. What a superb performance from everyone in the band. They got the crowd singing, dancing and enjoying the rest of the night. Geist are such an amazing band. Their songs are so catchy and interestingly different to anything I've heard. They surely packed White Lion, and it's one album launch that should make a mark in music history. Congratulations on your new album "Decreasing Circles".

An excellent gig The Royal Hotel Great Harwood, Great Harwood on Sat 4th Feb 06
I was lucky enough to see Geist at The Royal Hotel, Great Harwood along with some friends.
It was the second time I had seen them at this venue and enjoyed it even more than the first. Everyone I spoke to was very impressed with their music.
Two excellent sets by a very tight band with an unusual sound. The lead guitar and violin really gelled together while bass and drums, plus the unusual voice of the singer made sure the overall sound was really very good.
The fact they play only original material just added to my enjoyment. Never easy for either band or audience when this is the case. Each song was listened to by a captive audience, then applauded at the end.
Not often a unknown band gets asked for an encore but Geist had to play three.
I have just being listening to a CD belonging to my son by the Stereophonics: reasonably like Geist but without the addition of the violin.
Someone should get this band a gig at a bigger venue, or as a backing band for a tour. They really are that good.
Thanks again guys for an excellent night and don't leave it too long before you return "up north".

Great gig The Royal Hotel Great Harwood, Great Harwood on Sat 4th Feb 06
I've got to admit I was apprehensive when I went to the concert, but was very pleased I did - it is certainly a band I will look out for and see again.
At first I wasn't sure, with one of the band members being a classical trained violinist, if it would work with the rest of the band, but it was outstanding and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

| | Songs For Your Neighbour
This was our 'toe in the water' of album recording. Made on a budget to say the least, it consists of 10 Hudson / McDevitt songs. Vocals, instrumentation and drum programming are by John McDevitt, except electric guitar by Neill Tupman, violin by Chris Goddard and backing vocals on That Was Then & All My Smiles by Lisa Camsell.
Songs For Your Neighbour has sold approx 2000 copies to date, and has served to allow Geist to recruit a full line-up for live shows and for the recording of the 1st album proper, Decreasing Circles. Along the way, Geist were asked to write and perform the theme tune to Channel 5 programme A Different Life. A sampled selection of this material can be heard by visiting the Geist website or the MP3 section here.
