A special night Jack Bird on Fri 18th Nov 05
Three performances from the up and coming generation of songwriters at the beautifully refurbished Assembly Rooms. The terrific acoustics of the hall and the small attendance lent the night a intimate air that the performers did their best to continue.
First on was Jack Bird, who played a short but distinct set. Accompanying himself on an acoustic guitar Jack's honesty and emotive performance took the room from the start of his first song and held the room's attention until the last note.
Matt Sage brought a stripped down version of the much larger orchestra of love with him. The fiddle, double bass and acoustic guitar set up worked well and filled out the hall with some very pleasant and enjoyable songs.
Mark Abis headlined, his acoustic guitar playing supported by a double bass and stripped down drum set. Theses few instruments made it possible for the group to create a surprisingly broad range of textures and feelings, from faux cowboy prairie songs to the urban wistfulness of 'walking through the heart of New York'. Mark's warm personality and flair for performance kept the evening flowing from one magical moment to another. After an encore of his most successful song from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show 'summer breeze' Mark did a brisk trade in selling his latest CD to every member of the audience and everyone left feeling that they had had a very special evening.
