Still in Shock and Awe The Horns, Watford on Sun 26th Feb 06
To brand this particular gig as high profile would be something of an understatement. It was the return to the capital of The HoneyThieves, Watford. The town's finest rock covers band, at The Horns for the first time collectively as a band.
And it was instantly clear as soon as they took to the stage that they would have no problems in getting a return invite. Paul Irvine, now in his trademark black outfit, mumbled some typically cheeky words (dearly beloved!) into the microphone as the band launched directly into the decidedly heavy anthem which is "Where the Streets Have No Name" (U2). As you would very much expect, the crowd erupted, sang every word and jumped around with an alarming sense of abandon. It was hard to believe they've never played here before and with audience comments such as "where the hell have you lot been" and "we've been waiting for a local band like you like for years". Die-Hards in the bar were being submitted to a Saturday night performance at 4 o'clock on a Sunday afternoon! - it seems like they hit the spot from the first number.
The performance was essentially divided in two - the first set was comprised entirely of kick ass anthems, 11 to be precise, whilst the second half was reserved for a brilliant audition of Claire (One Way or Another - Blondie) and their now almost legendary diverse covers material that left the stunned crowd wanting more, more, more (Billy Idol I think). The Birthday of Neil Shannon (Wacky to his friends) who arranged the gig for the band got his 15 mins of fame. When to the surprise of the regulars, he took to stage to sing 2 anthems (You Can't Always Get What You Want and Teenage Kicks). Neil is now known in the pub as "Rock God".
Of the new songs the band covered: Cuts Like a Knife (Bryan Adams) - already sounds like a HoneyThieves classic, and is sure to be a calling card of theirs throughout 2006 and beyond. The slow burning guitar works of Trevor (Lead) & John (Rhythm) on Never Tear Us Apart (INXS) was another early highlight, built around some characteristically impressive vocals and an incredibly sweet sounding chorus.
The band then went off, before returning for a rare double-length second set, possibly as a thank you to the army of new fans, but moreover to Wacky. Rattling through these songs, culminating in a impeccable cover of Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd), vocals co-existing with bass-lines by Simon, clinical rhythm guitar work by John, haunting keyboards by Jules and in "the engine room at the back" Jack on drums. The guitar solo... well what can I say! I've seen and heard it before and it still impresses the hell out of me every time Trevor picks and bends his way through what was undoubtedly the song and solo of the afternoon.
From the introduction of "Give a big hand for The HoneyThieves" came an un-deserving "Who" from the bar area, to the outtro of "We Must Have These Guys Back", I and many others were in a state of "SHOCK and AWE" at the band. You must see them.
As a long standing follower of the band, I'm writing this review in hope and desperation that The Horns rebook this band as a matter of utmost urgency. Watford cannot be deprived of this LOCAL TALENT any longer. Frighteningly, it seems, the best is yet to come.

Scorching Performance The Highwayman, Watford on Sat 18th Feb 06
The whole band looked fired up for the challenge of a solid two hour set, and their instruments were certainly built to sustain the impact.
Irv's voice continues to move, with its anthemic qualities, and he was quickly into his element, although noticeably more than happy to let the crowd take over for Wonderwall.
The imperious Trevor Wickes delivered the group's trademark rousing guitar lines with evident relish on Comfortably Numb, while bassist Simon Burden provided solid support at both ends of the musical scale, some quality backing vocals heightening a resilient Take ya Mama.
Drummer Jack Cumber stamped his usual authority on his huge kit and giant dinner-plate cymbals for company.
As you'd expect the old classics got the biggest crowd reaction - a magisterial Never Tear Us Apart, a pumped-up Virtigo, and a joyously warm rendition of Breakfast at Tiffanys. A real highlight was the appearance of Cuts Like A knife, a wonderful performance with much finger pointing from the lead singer, by now bathed in sweat. The band affirming their status once again with a formidable quantity of anthems and a fine light show. Not only that, but musically they had provided strong evidence in their covered material that the creative fires are burning strongly once again in Watford.
In short, it was a thoroughly professional and workmanlike display from a band that promise much in 2006, keep eyes open for them.
