Set in the market town of Aylesbury, the Hop Pole is a short ten minute walk from the town centre bus and train station. It occupies a prominent position on Bicester Road and Southern Road. Surrounded by local businesses, it is ideally placed to make use of its superb function room for conferences and private parties.

  Sick and tired of rubbish TV on a Saturday night ?
Looking for something different to do instead ?
If the answers to the questions above are a resounding yes then do yourself a favour and do as I did and get along to see Abakus, you won't regret it.
I found myself in a lovely little pub called The Hop Pole in Bicester Rd, Aylesbury on Saturday evening, gotta say the evening got off to a fine start as I was confronted with a wicked selection of beers and ales when I first went to the bar. So far so good...
Things just got better after that. Abakus played two fine eclectic sets of classic music. Covering everything from primal stomp-a-long 'Louie Louie' to the more modern charms of the anthemic 'I Predict A Riot' to standards such as 'Purple Haze' and 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' all of which were pulled off with gusto and panache.
Let's face it, you've got to have balls to tackle some of these numbers and make them your own but believe me these dudes can do just that.
Lead singer and front man Jay was in fine voice and put in a spirited and energetic performance despite some space limitations. Guitarist Simon provided some stunning lead and tasteful rhythm guitar, even providing lead vocals during 'Sultans Of Swing', damn, that can't be easy. Of course all of this would be for nowt without a foundation to build on and that was ably provided by bassist Adam and drummer Dave. Fantastic.
The band did a great job in engaging the audience and by the end of the evening people were dancing and having a great time. Gotta say the place had a lovely atmosphere and I'm happy to say was an idiot free zone. I'll definitely be going back to the Hop Pole to see Abakus again. Highly recommended! | |
