Breath of fresh air The Portland Arms, St Albans on Sun 30th Sep 07
Went to see this trio out of curiosity and we were well pleased. So used to hearing the blues thrashed out at high volume on distorted amps, this was a breath of fresh air. Backed by one-third of a drum kit and double bass the originals must have sounded something like this when they were first written. The acoustic guitar was occasionally swapped for a ukulele giving variety to the performance. Enjoyable evening in this comfortable pub drinking excellent beer and wine. Top band. Top pub.

Covers band fills the pub. The Half Moon, Hitchin on Sat 14th Jul 07
It's difficult to compete with all of the other music when Rhythms of the World is taking place, but Juke Joint managed rather well.
It was obvious that some of the crowd were regulars, and had come specifically to hear the band (who were late arriving, hence the chance to 'eavesdrop' on conversations taking place around me).
For those of you who haven't yet attended a gig, JJ are a three piece - Bob on drums, Dave on double bass and Paul on guitar. All three members sing, and the band play and sing numbers from the 50s, 60s and 70s. The numbers played vary according to the venue and crowd.
Those who were at the Half Moon had an excellent evening - the band were in good form, and all of the customers inside the bar were in good voice! This band can usually get people participating, and as there was no room to dance most people sang instead. The ages varied too - it wasn't just the forty and fifty-somethings who were singing the lyrics, so JJ obviously appeal to a wide range of folk.
A number of customers said they enjoyed the gig, and a couple leaving to meet friends mentioned that they'd have to come back again and hear a set all the way through. Other comments overheard included compliments, including one for Paul who 'really made it sing'. (This latter referring to his guitar work.)
Having seen the band at a number of different venues I'd say this was one which really appreciated them. Well done, people!

The best thing since sliced bread The White Lion, St Albans on Tue 25th Oct 05
Juke Joint are the band everybody should and do appreciate!
Never before have I had such good time in a pub, how can listening to their music and drinking a beer be any better way to spend an evening. Life was boring until they hit town, my Tuesday night at the White Lion will never be the same again.
If you love a complete history of Rock / Roll and Blues from Chuck Berry to the Troggs and beyond just listen to Juke Joint watch Paul play Wow Thing and you will see he can do it better than Jimi!

Jukes go roots The White Lion, St Albans on Tue 17th May 05
Three cool cats happened into the White Lion on Tuesday and cooked up a musical feast from minimal ingredients. We've heard this threesome - upright bass, drums and guitar - before doing rock n roll and blues. Tonight they spread their roots to take in tunes from the days of old, like Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out, and Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (with grit that was lacking in the better known George Harrison version). Dropping guitar for banjolele (a ukulele that thinks it's a banjo) was a brave move that could have descended into cute novelty territory, but didn't.
It's a long way from Buddy Can You Spare a Dime to Sha La La La Lee and Jumpin' Jack Flash. The Jukes did it effortlessly. The best band of their kind round here. Actually, the only band of their kind.
