keithfest The White Lion, St Albans on Tue 16th Aug 05
Keith Moore and some of his many friends performed a swinging set, inspired mainly by the sixties.
The White Lion gig on Tuesday saw the Liverpudlian legend pay homage to the Beatles, the Kinks, Small Faces, Sandie Shaw and Dusty Springfield.
Opening with crowd-pleaser Strawberry Fields, Here Comes the Sun and the beautiful In A Little Bubble, he went on to play loads of varied and brilliant stuff, including Tired of Waiting for You and Ballad of John and Yoko.
Chris French, the man with many names aka Eddie's Brother and Pale Marble Dad, as I like to call him, delivered a handful of tunes with his usual wit, irony and consistent drama. These were; his own Daniel in the Greenhouse, Hi From Dubai and Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi and Summer Breeze, complete with audience participation.
Well-loved charismatic singer/songwriter J Starck and bassist backing vocalist Simon Herries delighted the rather frisky audience with self-penned emotive ballad Someone You Thought You Knew, with clever guitar picking, and covers The Letter and Joe Jackson's Different For Girls.
Mac MacLaren played a couple of MacLaren Wall songs and Radiohead's High and Dry. Nurse Nicola, who has a certain vulnerable quality to her voice, treated us to originals accompanying herself on guitar.
Animated Nick Stevenson got up and did an alternative folk number from his Legion of Filth repertoire, accompanied by a fellow band member.
The lovely Bill Johnson gave us a great rendition of Bowie's Lady Stardust. And, um, that girl who did What You're Made Of, by Lucie Silvas, and Aimee Mann's version of Coldplay's The Scientist wasn't too bad either. [Modesty, indeed. The songs were fab. I was there.]
Keith ended the frenzied evening with All or Nothing and Get Back with Bill, Simon and star singer/songwriter Ruth Tidmarsh (PlanetRuth, Ugly and the Beast, Chuck 'n' the Wagons) appearing on "stage".
Thanks to PR queen Philippa Le Marquand for running Ruby Tuesday and to Simon for the sound.
* Keith Moore's 11-track album, Therapy, is available now for a bargainous £5! He can be found at the Blue Angel Acoustic Café, The Horn, St Albans, along with most of the artists (read: motley crew) mentioned above.
