Like a Thief[Original]
Like a ThiefThis is the music of Holly Jazz Lowe AKA Like a Thief. Safe to say then that, having been signed to Mercury for a debut album only to be scrapped at the 11th hour, her musical schooling has since been an individual one. Marking her 3rd single, and as with much of Holly's material, The Hours We Kept owes its lament largely to the seedy, rich underworlds that she has found herself in for the last two years. It tells of a solitary existence and a life away from loved ones that ultimately results in strangerdom. 'I apologise if while you were asleep, I was up doing things' she sings.

Taking the best bits of Holly's genre-crossing, era-straddling sound, it dynamically flits between the soulful and brooding to the almost doo-wop good-time swagger of what could be early Beatles.

The single's predecessor 'Cartography Song' was heralded as a classy, haunting and otherworldly track that nodded to such greats as The Beach Boys and Laura Nyro, while still taking influence from modern day underground art-pop. Field Music in particular can be felt on the b-side Calling All Dilemmas. Even when the influences may not be hugely overt (Animal Collective played a role in Cartography Song too) what her music continually provides is something genuine, emotive and with a certain innocence that never comes across as histrionic, juvenile or too simplistic. Like A Thief is the antithesis of facile X Factor pop - but just as accessible.

"An eccentric take on dread and loss, growing up and falling in love...Like A Thief could steal your affection" - The Guardian

Holly Jazz Lowe The PumpHouse Arts Centre, Watford on Tue 3rd Jun 08
The PumpHouse Arts Centre's pageReview NOT edited by Lemonrock - original text rated as one of our top reviews Holly, who hails from Scarborough of all places (they hold a fair there every 300 years) headlined at the Pump House last week - Tuesday 3rd June. Her stage name is Like a Thief, which to my mind conjours up a whole band, but although she played a solo set, she filled the venue with a big sound. She performs her own material, which can sometimes make the heart sink at the thought of sitting through someone's adolescent angst-ridden journey. But in her case, her songs were witty, well crafted pieces of real life, full of humour and with catchy lyrics and ideas.

She played really skillful guitar, very rhythmic that complemented the songs, and then moved onto keyboard which is obviously her main instrument, as she played with enormous flair.

Have I mentioned her voice - strong, expressive, impressive.

And then her patter between songs is funny, sparky, quirky, confident.

I won't even mention that fact that she's a doll and that she wore hotpants. I don't want to get arrested, and then there's my wife. In fact my reputation as a high court judge could be called into question.

My god, this woman's got it all. Why isn't she a big star?

She seems to be on some sort of Picaresque UK tour so we may not see her like again for a while, but remember the name; we saw her at the PumpHouse in June 2008.
