[Tue 11th Apr 06] Well, not a MW blog for a chan... Well, not a MW blog for a change, but an account of Mac's hosted evening at The Rose and Crown. It's very different playing on your own when you're used to having a fronting singer. Why? Number 1: you have to be the fronting singer. While you can usually get away with a few syllables chucked in the general direction of an audience if you're the backing singer, you actually have to communicate as much as you can to them. Eye contact and everything. And while I know I'm no Robbie Williams when it comes to crowd pleasing, there were moments last night when I wondered if I'd forgotten to do up my flies or something that had everyone more or less silenced as I introduced my many, varied, and excellent guests. Of course being totally sober and naturally nervous didn't help. Reminded me of my teaching days in London ("Sir, sir, we gonna build a video recorder today?" "No. Put your burger in the bin and we will do some adding up sums, you will need that for Ohm's Law". "Wossat sir?"... ) But this lot was much better behaved, and actually clapped a great deal, something they never did in Room D4 on a chalky talky Friday afternoon in Paddington. Anyway, I digress. I played my best rehearsed songs instead of the ones I had planned to do, out of sheer panic. But, the highlight of my evening was playing with my buddies, Bill and Nick ('No Surprises' Radiohead cover with Bill, and self-penned 'Simple Sally' with Nick adding oodles of rhythm and electric riff depth to the Dundee Station song). Next time you see a lecturer-style chappie standing in front of a mike, wonder to yourselves what's screaming silently through his mind... and... don't stare! | |

Mac's local - when he's not playing music, or embarrassing himself at Karaoke, this is where you'll find the rascal, usually sampling the real ales while finishing off the difficult bits in the crossword that no-one else could face... Very friendly pub, well-kept real ales, unexpectedly good food (as of Sept 07) and great mix of people, young and old, from all backgrounds. |

It's true folks... MacLaren Wall is half woman. Mind you, that is very useful in getting people to come to gigs... (16 links) |
