| | Shades of Blues presents Lisa Mills Duo Lisa Mills is a gifted singer, guitarist and songwriter whose blues drenched and soulfully delivered original music is clearly grounded in her Mississippi roots. She has been compared to the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Janis Joplin and Etta James, no hollow boast as In 1999 Lisa became lead singer in Big Brother and the Holding Company, performing all of the Janis Joplin parts, while given the freedom to give her own interpretation of the music, but Lisa has her own unique style of music and is not an imitation of anyone. Hand-picked by none other than Robert Plant to support his tours of the USA and Europe, this has to be one of the most sought after acts on the blues scene. Lisa has shared the stage and studio with Jeff Beck, Jools Holland, Andy Fairweather Low, and others; and has appeared at many major festivals, including Europe's largest outdoor festival, The Glastonbury Festival where she received a standing ovation and a rare encore request from her set in the Acoustic Tent. from a crowd of over ten thousand people, the Gloucester Blues Festival, U.K. she has also opened for, Dr. John, Delbert McClinton, and Tony Joe White, while abroad. For this very special gig Lisa is joined by UK Double Bass maestro Ian Jennings from the Big Town playboys. 8.30pm - 11pm Lisa Mills duo - "You should all check her out, she has a wonderful voice." Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) £12.50 |

A revelation The Stacey Smith Band on Sat 9th Feb 08
It must have been the hottest ticket in town when a dozen of St Albans' finest musos took to the stage of the The Maltings Arts Theatre on Saturday night.
Sold out weeks in advance, the crème de la crème were there to help launch Pete Waters' eponymous new CD.
The night got off to a rousing start with The Stacey Smith Band who blew everyone away. Memo to Pete: Bad choice for a warm-up band because this lot were so on-the-boil that they actually took the audience hostage.
Singer-songwriter Stacey herself was a revelation with such a polished performance and such excellent stagecraft that I'm sure we will be seeing more of this Annie Lennox lookalike.
It was a family affair with dad Bryan Smith on guitar and brother Darren on drums.

Overwheming Success Pete Waters on Sat 9th Feb 08
It must have been the hottest ticket in town when a dozen of St Albans finest musos took to the stage at The Maltings Arts Centre on Saturday night. Sold out weeks in advance the creme de la creme was there to help launch Pete Waters' eponymous new album.
Pete, dolled up in an extremely sharp suit, bounded onto stage with his core band of John Devine, Pete Ridley, Barry Evans, Steve Rodford (The Zombies), Bruce Fursman, Julianne Healy, with backing singers Helen Flanagan and Stacey Smith. Other guest artists who stepped in and out during the night were Bernie Devine and Jez Guest, not forgetting Ray Waters of Runaway Boys fame (Pete's son) so at times there were a dozen people on stage.
Considering most people in the audience had never heard the songs before they seemed to be absolutely loving it. He is by turns mournful. bitter and funny. His songwriting voice is probably at its best on "Everything I've Learned About You". He is equally at home in melancholy mode on "No Fixed Abode" or in the upbeat appeal to "Do The Best You Can".
Going by the buzz from the audience I'd say the evening had been an overwhelming success.

Jenium earn their 'wings' Jenium on Fri 25th Jan 08
I first saw Jenium live in the Rose and Crown in St Albans last year. They were pretty good then but boy, have they worked hard since! They played the Maltings to support Deaf Shepherd in a worthy charity function and we were given a blinding set of their own songs, delivered deftly and with energy. They have really fused as a band now and I am sure they will be around for some time to come.
A privilege to watch a new act stamp their mark on the local scene. Lads more gigs soon, please!

Reply from Jenium: Thank you very much for your positive review!
As we are a new band we need support and we are grateful for yours!

Spellbinding The Daniel Smith Blues Band on Sat 21st Jul 07
Humour provided the keynote for the Daniel Smith Blues Band at The Maltings.
Had Daniel Smith not been the king of the keyboards, he would still have won a few hearts with his sardonic, dry sense of humour - and his hunky dark good looks didn't go unnoticed either by my female companions.
It made a refreshing change to have a keyboard player at the centre of the action instead of the inevitable guitarist. Not that democratic Dan hogged the attention. I've never seen such a generous frontman making sure his players got their fair share of the limelight.
Even drummer Pete Miles scored a 10-minute drum solo. It's a long time since I've seen that but then it's rare to find a drummer of this calibre who can capture people's attention with a flick of a stick.
After leaving the stage to the drums, Daniel came back on holding a fire extinguisher which caused a chuckle but, just as we wondered if this was a hint to wind it up, he held it up horizontally for Pete to play.
This band look at each other, "talk" to each other in a non-verbal way and appreciate each other in the way that true professionals acknowledge each others' skills.
What struck me was that we had no flim-flam. No-one was glammed up or striking poses. The window-dressing was superfluous because these guys can play.
Lead guitarist Jon 'T-Bone' Taylor, hunched over his instrument in such a contorted, loving way you could almost see him suffering for his art, made me think of a chef slaving over a hot stove but he certainly cooked up a storm.
Bass player George Pearson - in true deadpan bass-player style - kept in the background but blossomed when he sang a couple of numbers. I almost think he is a better blues singer than Daniel.
But when you play boogie-woogie like Dan the man you don't need a strong vocal ability. I felt he was at his happiest on the instrumental numbers. Don't get me wrong - the man can sing but it's carried by his powerful playing. Just running one hand lightly across a few keys he could create a whole range of sound so fluent, so rich that you could only marvel at his control. As the evening drew to a close he treated us to a rendering of bottleneck piano playing - something I had never seen before.
Another first on the night included a well-deserved standing ovation at the end. Move over Jools Holland - a new king of the keyboards reigns.
Once again, Bob Ayre, who puts on these storming blues sessions under his "Shades of Blues" umbrella, has brought something spellbindingly wonderful to St Albans.
We owe him a debt of thanks.

|
| Print 3 flyers per A4 page, with marked cutting guides. Hint: setting your start date to the first of a month, and your end date to the last day of a month, gives a neat heading on your flyer, e.g. setting 1 May 2008 and 31 Aug 2008 as the start and end dates will produce the heading: 'MAY - AUGUST 08'. Try it! You can also set the font size to a decimal value (e.g. 9.3) to make the gigs fit exactly onto the page. | |
