Great potential The Naturals on Sat 24th Jun 06
There are original material bands and cover bands in Devon, good, bad and indifferent but rarely does a band appear with the potential that The Naturals have. They are one of the few who have managed to send a shiver up my spine with a song during their gig at the Manor. The audience was small (mainly because the Manor has yet to establish itself as a good music venue in Torquay) but was won over as the evening progressed. They are as at home with Guns and Roses and The Police as they are with more gentle songs.
Their style has been incorrectly described as folk, probably because an electric fiddle is a feature of the band. That they can rock there is no doubt and choice of material is a little down tempo at present. Probably this is wise whilst the lead guitarist is employed in taking the place of a bass player on tenor guitar. I think they need a bass player to free the lead guitarist and this would allow some chemistry to develop in the bass/drums department and lift the whole thing to a new level.
There is something of Curved Air about them (Curved Air were around in the early seventies and their main hit was 'Back Street Luv') But I think the violin parts are more melodic and tasteful in The Naturals and the vocals have more harmony and style. The musical ability is high and a tight feel is certainly there, even to more difficult, or complex songs.
Being super-critical they need to improve the P.A. sound, running the drums through the P.A. But then a true bass guitar would be needed to complement. This is difficult without someone to mix out front, as we well know in our band, but it would be a great improvement.
Given a good out-front sound and expansion in line-up they would be truly knockout and original material would be eagerly awaited. It would be shame if this most original band become overlooked because of the minor mods needed.
Altogether a enjoyable evening and I certainly hope to see them again.
