This town ain't big enough The Crawford, Exeter on Sat 26th Jan 08
The Crawford's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. I went to the Crawford expecting a good night but I had a brilliant night!

I don't want to pick out one particular band member cos the whole was more than the sum of the parts put together. Yeah, I know, not exactly original - but a perfect description.

Vocals - energetic, passionate, 100% showgirlship. "Roxanne" was my favourite - Les, you're a star!

Guitar - needs no introduction..... "Gimme Some Lovin" - love ya Big Norm! XX

Bass - Ady, more energy than a bottle of Sanatogen and 3 whisky chasers - you're much too much fun for a bass player!!

Drums - Tom, we are not worthy - "Turn It On Again" - you will be famous and I'll pretend I knew you!

Keys - Steve you are a total wizard... "This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us" - I will therefore envy you forever with your 10 fingers and 3,000 notes - far too many if you ask me!

If you want to see a band that don't wallow in their own glory and just get on and enjoy it, and make sure you do too, then don't hesitate to check out Max!

If you pretend to be a groupie you could even get a hug!

Reply from Max: Lyn You Star!! Its was an enormous pleasure to see you at the gig and an even bigger buzz to get such a glowing review from such a nice person as yourself. Cheers, we all owe you one now ( a hug that is.... you'll have to buy your own batteries!!). Goodluck with the new band, please let us know when you are up and running so we can come and see you . Big Norm
Very Enjoyable! The Weary Traveller, Cullompton on Sat 15th Dec 07
The Weary Traveller's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. rated as one of our top reviews Pete (singer in Electric Landlady) and I popped in to see my mate Tom on drums and to see Big Norm again as it had been too long! He is always good value.

I hadn't seen Tom play with Max before and I must say I was impressed. I loved the Moby Dick drum solo sans sticks! The concentration on his face at times was palpable. He's a very physical drummer and good to watch.

Big Norm was having fun and playing his usual, brilliant chops. It's a shame his guitar was a bit buried in the mix at times, but then I'm a guitarist and probably say that about most gigs I see! His only fault was making everything seem so easy. I'll have to have a word with the union about that. It's not fair on us lesser (pun intended) mortals!

I hadn't seen the rest of Max before. I didn't catch the bassist and the keyboard players' names but they played their roles really well and were on the ball with all the right sounds and parts.

Star of the show for us was Les, the wee lass at the front. Her energy and enthusiasm was infectious. She didn't half work hard! Songs that stood out were Sparks' "This Town Ain't Big Enough", Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright", Alex Harvey's "Delilah" and "Time Warp" from the Rocky Horror Show. She'd obviously put in the preparation beforehand and knew them really well. They aren't the easiest songs to sing, especially when dancing around so much!

We left having been royally entertained to the MAX and are determined to see them again.

Thanks guys!

X (for Les)
Ian (Electric Landlady), Sun 16th Dec 07
Reply from Max: Hi Ian & Pete We're glad you enjoyed the show; it was a fantastic first gig at The Weary for us. Its great that nice people like yourself post reviews as feedback from the audience is always appreciated. We'll try and get down to the Village on the 4th Jan and return the compliment. Have a great Christmas see you next year :o) Big Norm Ps Les sends her Hugs & Kisses
good weather, great band Ship Inn, Teignmouth on Mon 27th Aug 07
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. It was a truly great British bank holiday weekend in Teignmouth.

The best band of the whole weekend was Max. Great songs, great players and a seriously hunky drummer. I took a gig leaflet and shall stalk them again ;) Joking aside, it's nice to see something new in the area instead of the same old bands.

Sheer entertainment Ship Inn, Teignmouth on Mon 27th Aug 07
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. I had heard on the radio that Exeter band Max were headlining the music festival at Teignmouth over the bank holiday weekend. Having sort of drifted in and out of the show over most of the weekend I was curious to see Monday's main attraction as the rest of the festival had been of a high standard. When I arrived I realised I had seen these guys in a pub somewhere about a year ago. I seemed to remember they were pretty good so decided to stay for the show... and what a show it was!

From the off the female lead vocal took control of both the audience and the stage: she kept them in her capable grip until the end. It was sheer entertainment. It seems the band is named after her and I'm not surprised as she must be one of the most accomplished singers to front a band on the southwest scene. It seemed fitting that one of the best singers was backed by what must be one of the best bands in the area at this time. They had two to three hundred people singing and dancing long into the evening.

The choice of songs was refreshingly varied from Bowie through Sparks and on to the Sex Pistols. The end saw an ecstatic crowd refusing to let them off the stage and in time honoured tradition the band played on. I think they would have played on and on if it wasn't for the intervention of the organisers who seemed very pleased indeed. It was amusing to see holiday makers queuing with their children to meet members of the band after the show.

It seems a shame in some ways that, no doubt the next time we will be able to see this band is in the corner of some dingy pub somewhere. If only they could be unleashed onto the bigger stage we could really see what they are capable of.

Try it! You can also set the font size to a decimal value (e.g. 9.3) to make the gigs fit exactly onto the page.
