Playing to the crowd Stevie K Band on Thu 17th Apr 08
This band plays to the crowd - and there's nothing wrong with that. The days of musicians playing among themselves (especially jazzers) and ignoring the audience are well and truly over. Last time we saw them as a trio at The Goat they played blues, jazz, latin. This time, with additional pianist, the first set consisted old favourite blues, rock and a little jazz. Second set was much heavier rock material from their new CD (selling like hotcakes). Nice tracks, especially No Sign of Her and Same Old Lies. Lies seem to feature in a lot of his songs so he's in the right business. All these guys can really play and at the risk of upsetting the others I made the drummer Man of the Match - terrific technique. We enjoyed every number. Put this talented band on your must-see list. The pub, if crowded, is friendly and serves nice real ales and lagers quickly.

A Warm Feeling Coming Up Over Me Sossity on Sat 29th Mar 08
It was a cold, rainy night in St Albans, but the welcome was warm at the Mermaid. And the warm feeling continued when the music started up. Paul Forrest and Marcie Schreier, collectively known as Sossity, performed a large, diverse selection of songs, many made famous by Jethro Tull. Paul has been the front man of the Dayglo Pirates, a superb Tull tribute act, for over ten years. He has recently teamed up with Marcie to perform some of the more intimate songs penned by Ian Anderson, along with some equally impressive original songs, which could easily have come from an Ian Anderson solo album. Marcie, who plays flute and sings a mixture of lead and harmony vocals, also comes with an amazing array of original songs.
The duo's voices blended very well together, and Paul's dexterous guitar playing was superb throughout, one particular highlight being 'Crazy Man Michael', a song made popular by Fairport Convention. Some of the Tull songs which stood out included Skating Away, Reasons for Waiting, Just Trying To Be, Wondring Again, and the rarely heard Up The Pool. The original material also shone through, displaying much wit, in particular Spanish and Never Have Enough Time Blues.
Marcie kept the audience entertained with amusing stories behind some of the songs, and how the couple originally got together. A total of 26 songs were presented, with Sossity performing for around two hours to a smallish but very appreciative audience.
All I can say, in summary, is - even better than the real thing!!

Fan-tastic The Natalies on Sat 26th Jan 08
The evening didn't start well. I thought that a band called the Natalies would have been a collection of leather clad girl-band types, and sadly I was disappointed. However the feeling didn't last and the minute the band struck up, I knew it was going to be a great night - the band cover such musical ground there was something for everyone and in a cramped, hot and steamy pub the place was rocking.
The main difference with this band over so many others is not relying on the same old same old (Stairway anyone?) to get them by - if you can dance to it, they play it and play it well. They featured some superb guitar work, synth madness and frantic yet spot-on drum and bass work.
Personal highlights had to be the Blondie and Buggles numbers - The Natalies obviously have NO shame, and are all the better for it! When they ripped into Michael Jackson I was totally floored...
I can't recommend the band enough and it really is superb to have some new life in what can sometimes feel a tired music scene - not a sign of any 'blooze' in the house, and it was bliss!

Reply from The Natalies: Thanks Mick - appreciate the kind words - we aim to please. Look out for further 'shameless' coverology when we're back in May!
Cheers, all the girls! | |
Born again pleasure The Natalies on Sat 26th Jan 08
OK, I am biased, it was my birthday night, and I knew I was gonna have a good time anyway... live band, great pub... but I have to say that The Natalies made my day one to remember... unpretentious, good, solid, rock and very accessible pop covers, all the guys played with dedication and energy. You couldn't help dancing to Elvis Costello, The Jam, hits from the 80s to the present day, all done accurately and with a clear sound where all the instruments were easily picked out. Top band - well above your average pub band, and adding a new layer of professionalism to live pub music.

Reply from The Natalies: Hi Steve, its great to get such a positive response. Great pub, cool crowd and we had a lot of fun. Looking forward to our return in May. Cheers, The Nats

|
|
|
| Print 3 flyers per A4 page, with marked cutting guides. Hint: setting your start date to the first of a month, and your end date to the last day of a month, gives a neat heading on your flyer, e.g. setting 1 May 2008 and 31 Aug 2008 as the start and end dates will produce the heading: 'MAY - AUGUST 08'. Try it! You can also set the font size to a decimal value (e.g. 9.3) to make the gigs fit exactly onto the page. | |
