Derrin Nauendorf, Mike Last, Suzy T Mike Last on Thu 20th Jul 06
Mike Last's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. rated as one of our top reviews Suzy Thomas was first on the bill, but surely she won't be for long. An easy-going, confident display af perfectly natural singing and playing was Suzy's strong point - the gig seemed just a pleasant part of her day - and it was certainly a very pleasant part of mine. Her songs were memorable, well composed and the performance was lively and engaging. As a set it was perhaps just a little on-paced and maybe needed an up-tempo number or a really slow ballad to mix it up a little, but it didn't detract from a beautiful performance. Her free CD single "Mirror For Me" was eagerly received and the driving band arrangements on the CD place her firmly in the modern country-influenced rock category without ever typecasting her completely. She's well worth seeing again. Just charming.

Mike Last was next, (but not last) - oh how he must hate those puns - and injected much needed pace and wit into the evening's proceedings with a set of original songs - including - bravely, considering Mr Kyps' discerning audience - a first performance of some new material. The lively "Said and Done" was followed by an Ezio cover (he supported them at Mr Kyps earlier in the year). After "Separate" came "Take It Or Leave It" when finally the audience decided they were going to take it, and beaming faces and genuinely warm applause greeted each song.

Then it was time for the ultimate modern stalking song "Cyberpsycho" and the hesitantly introduced Elastic, a novelty song that appeared to be about having an exceptionally flexible girlfriend. His set ended too quickly by half with "Russian Bride," a dark tale of Eastern mafia - just great. What next? Perhaps Mike will do a Derrin Nauendorf cover at his next Mr Kyps gig? He sings well, plays well, looks good and has bags of personality. Make sure you see him next time - and he had a free CD too. As one chap said to me at the bar, "He's brilliant, isn't he?"

Then it was time for Mr N himself. A three-piece band (double-bass, drums and Derrin on acoustic guitar) thundered through his original material. Rhythmically complex, engagingly performed and very exciting, the performance only lacked memorable melodies to have been perfect. Derrin had obviously picked great musicians and despite the low number of gigs together, they were very, very tight.

Great support Sweet Black Angels on Sat 21st Jan 06
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. Being a regular at Mr Kyps and big fan of Bon Jovi I knew the night would be good, fortunately I arrived early enough to see the support band Sweet Black Angels who impressed me very much.

On arrival I noticed the usual merchandise stand by the entrance but oddly it wasn't for the main band but the support act - I had a quick look and you could tell these guys meant business, then the room erupted as the lads came on stage.

At first glance you could see they were taken back by the turn out this early on in the eve but once started they seemed comfortable and loved the crowd's response.

They performed a very tight set all be it only 40mins (I suppose you have to start somewhere) full of good catchy tunes which had a solid rock drive behind them provided by the rhythm section allowing the lad on guitar to wander free.

A very good night topped of by By Giovi who where solid as ever and musically perfect to the real thing.

A Rockin' Show Voodoo Vegas on Sat 3rd Sep 05
Voodoo Vegas's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. If you didn't go to Mr. Kyps on Saturday 3rd then you missed out on a cracking night of hair metal. Local lads Cold Earth put on another outstanding performance, I have seen these guys a few times now and for stage presence, crowd entertainment & originality they must be one of the best local rock acts around.

They only play their own songs which may not always pull the crowds, or be everyone's cup of tea but it's good to see a young band unwilling to compromise and
they have some great rock n roll lyrics with songs like "Good Girls Go Bad for Rock N Roll","Jimmy Silver", "High", and one of my favorites "Taxi" which has some cool riffs & a sleezy blues rhythm on harmonica, that you just cant help boogying too!

Bad Boy Nicky Brown's guitar playing was awesome & shows a lot of talent, in fact he had some of the young kids at the front staring in wonderment. Lawrence's vocals were spot on and they really used the large stage well.

Watch this space because I think before too long these guys will be headliners.

locked-and-loaded arsenal Jak The Lad on Sat 30th Jul 05
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. Either fans of live rock music are catching on to the magic of a great night at Mr Kyps; or Jak the Lad and The Missing Link have massive fan followings. My theory is, it's probably a large portion of both. Regardless, Kyps fairly heaved with punters, and as ever, it was a joy to be part of it. Veterans, Jak the Lad, had given over a 30 minute spot to enable The Missing Link to make their debut on the Kyps' stage. Wow! This trio of lads are a mere 15 years old! To be so talented at such a young age has to be an excellent sign for their future. Tunnel-vision, lads, never look back, and you will see your dreams realised.

As with many young bands these days, The Missing Link already have the confidence to stick two fingers up to playing covers, and simply play their own material. And it was highly original, too. Veteran rock fan as I am, I'd be hard pushed to say who they sounded like - other than The Missing Link - it's their music, and the crowd received them heartily.

Jak the Lad are well seasoned in whipping up the crowd with their locked-and-loaded arsenal of classic rock ammo. They thundered out a great blend of material from Free, Bad Company, Tom Petty, the Beatles, and early Fleetwood Mac, amongst others.

A five-piece, their cheeky-chappy vocalist only added to the band's overall confidence with the crowd, adding some entertaining between-songs chat. And as is becoming the tradition at Kyps now methinks, as the night grew older, so the volume cranked up a little more, and every band, including Jak the Lad, sound all the better for it. Yes, another great night. It's like a rock fan's dream, they just keep coming up with them time after time - so all power to Kyps for having their finger on the pulse. And I have no doubt both Jak the Lad and The Missing Link will have invitations to return to tread the boards on that fast-becoming-famous stage in Parkstone before too long.
