Oldway Mansion, Paignton[Public Building]
Oldway Mansion
The Mansion was originally founded by Issac Singer, who made his fortune in the manufacture and sale of sewing machines, to be his home.

He died in 1875 with the construction unfinished. On inheriting the mansion his son Paris commsioned artisans to complete it, sending them to the Palace of Versailles for designs. Visitors can see this reflected in the mansion's grand staircase and ornately painted ceiling.

The mansion has had a varied history, serving as a hospital for convalescing soldiers in the First World War and becoming the Torbay Country Club in the 1920's. It was taken over by the RAF in 1940.

Paignton Urban District Council bought Oldway in 1946.
