Regular monthly The Halfway House, Rickmansworth on Fri 21st Mar 08
Ray 'Newhips' James is back with a bang. The band is back on the road pleasing their many fans. Usual powerful performance throughout especially Born To Be Wild, Route 66 and Honky Tonk Woman. Guitarist played like a man possessed - terrific on slide. If you like loud, hard blues and rock (you have been warned) this band is a must-see. They enjoy themselves and so will you.
This large pub has recently been taken over and renovated. Exposed beams, open fire. Steve the new landlord is booking the popular bands once a month on Fridays for the rest of the year so you will be able to see your favourites regularly. He did this at two of his previous pubs with great success. Great start to the weekend.
Four real ales, huge meals, huge car park, huge (soon to be landscaped) riverside gardens.

Reply from Phoenix Blues Band: Thanks for the kind words Derek. The guitarist usually plays like a man re-possessed.
homo bionicus The Portland Arms, St Albans on Sun 6th Jan 08
Just a stones throw from Verulamium lies a cosy pub with log fires. Playing tonight was half-man, half-machine Ray James. Bluesus acousticus from a smaller band. Acoustic guitar, drums and vocalus raucous Ray on saxes/harp. The band played softer (eh?) versions of their wide repertoire which really suits this venue. Usual enthusiastic versions of Walking The Dog, Without Love, Shake Your Moneymaker and, unbelievably, He'll Have To Go which must have had Jim turning. Again a 100% full-on performance from the band. Good chill-out pub with quality ales, cider and wine. Look out for the occasional Jazz session - that's a good gig.

Reliable Ray The Portland Arms, St Albans on Sun 14th Oct 07
Same old Ray Snakehips (Nohips?) James. Another typical performance from this blues rocker. Usual gravelly vocals, sax, harp treatment of his wide repertoire. Never fails to disappoint - to the delight of his followers. Phoenix Lite - acoustic(ish) guitar, half drums and Ray. I thought this would have been a quiet night. I was wrong. Ray is never quiet - even with a sore throat. Great performance. Good Fullers pints, too.

Another sensational performance The White Lion, St Albans on Tue 11th Sep 07
Yet again Ray and the guys delivered two storming sets. Ray sucked, blew, roared, stomped, jogged, marched, pogo'd and danced his way non-stop through the usual all-time favourites. From classic blues, soul, r&b, rock and also some Small Faces played in this band's style. Especially good: the bottleneck and harp combination - more of it and a CD please! Always a terrific live performance from these guys. Get off your moneymaker, put on your high heeled sneakers, get your motor runnin' and get there early. You won't see better live entertainment.
