Quiet Loner[Alt Country, Duo]
Quiet LonerQuiet Loner is the vehicle through which head honcho Matt Hill expresses his thoughts on those moments in life which show you at less than your best. Often accompanied by Alan Cook's pedal steel, Matt often plays solo acoustic sets, and was described by Uncut Magazine as sounding "like the sweet sting of velvet nettles".

Walnut cracker! The Blue Walnut Cafe, Torquay on Sat 17th Sep 05
The Blue Walnut Cafe's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. This was my first visit to The Blue Walnut and not being familiar with the material of Quiet Loner, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, any misgivings were swept away on entering this wonderful little venue with its intimate, candle lit ambience, which turned out to be the perfect setting for what was to come.

Quiet Loner, aka Manchester-based singer-songwriter Matt Hill, has an engaging, relaxed style with interesting and often humourous between-song chat which belies the often intense nature of his lyrics, dealing as they do with tales of heartbreak, illicit liaisons and execution(!) Such subjects could easily lead to depressing songs of self-pity and bitterness but for someone usually cast as an Americana/Alt. Country artist, Matt Hill avoids this by employing wit and irony in an distinctly English way.

In the absence of a support act, Matt played three sets, holding the attention of the two dozen packed into the Cafe throughout - no mean feat for a solo acoustic performer playing songs with which probably most people present were unfamiliar. It came as no surprise to learn that his 2004 album 'Secret Ruler of the World' was voted Album of the Year on the Americana-UK website. Highlights for me were the song about the last request of condemned murderer Gary Gilmour - 'Get me Johnny Cash on the Phone' and the twisted S & M saga, 'Henri'.

A hugely enjoyable evening; I will be return - and so too, hopefully, will Quiet Loner.
