Mmmm... Leather... Growler on Sat 28th Jun 08
Well that was an odd collection of songs. I don't mean that in a detrimental way but any band that begins their set segueing Pink Floyd's 'In the Flesh' with the Ramones' 'Blitzkrieg Bop' is definitely going to get your attention. And that's what they seem to demand. All three front of stage wearing leather jeans and a uniform black tore through a bizarre selection of songs that somehow worked in this context; a very heavy version of 'Turning Japanese', an all-slide rendition of 'Honky Tonk Women' (which started out by the band teasing us with the first verse of Led Zeppelin's 'In My Time of Dying'), a sludge-rock version of Britney Spears' 'Hit me Baby One more Time' (!), and an almost trash run-through of the Stones' 'Paint it Black' (introduced as 'Paint it Blacker') meant that although you know the songs, it's also apparent that these guys are really having fun. All told, the musicianship was excellent, with a singer who really gives his all and a guitarist with an entertaining line in very witty banter. The bassist is probably one of the tallest people I've ever laid eyes upon and very solid he was too but the drummer... Well... An absolute powerhouse. Never dropped a beat (or a stick for that matter) and very keen and able with the double-kick pedal. He even treated us to a drum solo at the end of Led Zep's 'Rock and Roll' that lasted a good two minutes that got a huge cheer from the crowd. All told, a very enjoyable evening and it's good to see a band who clearly enjoy what they do and to hear that they do it well. And I've NEVER heard a band cover 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' before. Outstanding.
