Ta Zeffs! The Red Zephyrs on Sun 23rd Dec 07
The Red Zephyrs only formed a few months ago but they appear to have several centuries of previous behind them. (And yards of footswitches in front of them!) They are probably already getting as many gigs as other St. Albans covers-gods Deaf Shepherd, and maybe for the same reasons: excellent skills, good equipment, attention to detail, interesting and not-always-safe repertoire. Both, too, talk to the audience as if they are there. And, for the Zeffs, some management thrown in too, no doubt, which is clearly not a bad thing.
The Robin Hood on a Sunday teatime is a gig that doesn't always work, with its mixed clientele of dedicated local music followers and those who are simply VERY late going home for their lunch, but the staff were friendly and fast, the band rocked out and it felt like Saturday night. Badge, by Cream - what a little gem! Maybe some bands would pass it over as too easy or obvious, but it's a perfect song of its type and earns lots of cheesy grins. They finished the first set with Whisky in the Jar, and what was missing? Nothing! We loved it! Personally I could always do without any Police numbers - none at all is still too many; to me they are musically clever but a triumph of style over soul - but you certainly know the quality and range of a band when they play them well.
Now, when will we see some original material? I'm sure it's in there.

Musically brilliant The Red Zephyrs on Fri 23rd Nov 07
I wasn't keen on going to see this unknown, local group at The Robin Hood in December, but I'm so glad I was persuaded to as I'd have missed one of best bands I've seen and heard in years. They are so professional and musically brilliant - the atmosphere in the pub was electric. Their rendition of 'Badge' was just fantastic. Can Alan really be "Rusty"? I fell in love with him and his music back in 1973, when he played at the Poulton Vic - he was good then but he and the rest of the band are amazing now. I strongly recommend going to see them.

Reply from The Red Zephyrs: Hi - Music Fan - 1973 and "Rusty" was a long time ago - I had forgotten the nickname and the Pouton Vic. OK - it is me but who are you ?

An early return please R&R Band on Sun 30th Sep 07
After running through the usual blues favourites, the band accelerated into R&B and R'n'R. At their best on the up-tempo numbers, of particular note were Unchain My Heart, Wishing Well, Folsom Prison Blues and the best version of Larry William's Slow Down since Cliff Bennett did it in the 60s. Highlight of the afternoon was when an excited female tried to invade the stage and had to be physically restrained. Bit like a Quo/Stones concert. Great entertainment and looking forward to seeing this band again. Good beer. Nice pub.

As I walk along, I wonder... The Runaway Boys on Sun 13th May 07
... who on earth do The Runaway Boys think they are? Here is the largest display of be-quiffed, be-bop, be-my-baby rock & roll songs from a set of monstrously attractive youngsters you are ever likely to see and hear. Their genre is well travelled - a rhythmic mix of great 50s and 60s singalong/jivealong hits from Elvis, Billy Fury, Cliff, Eddie Cochrane, and loads of other guys my dad told me about - but their lively presence is as new as this morning. Great enthusiasm, great playing (how anyone can learn all that 'fiddly' electric guitar at the age of 18 (?) is beyond me), great standing up on the upright bass (that must have taken a lot of Pilates lessons...) and these 3 guys LOOK the part too, with black & white togs, floppy ties and the odd hat. Yes, you get older, tighter, more authoritative bands playing rock & roll, but I've never been so involved with the music as with the Runaways... unique, unpretentious, uninhibited, and vastly under-known... for the moment anyway.

|
|
|
| Print 3 flyers per A4 page, with marked cutting guides. Hint: setting your start date to the first of a month, and your end date to the last day of a month, gives a neat heading on your flyer, e.g. setting 1 May 2008 and 31 Aug 2008 as the start and end dates will produce the heading: 'MAY - AUGUST 08'. Try it! You can also set the font size to a decimal value (e.g. 9.3) to make the gigs fit exactly onto the page. | |
