The Rose and Crown is a traditional 16th century pub situated in the beautiful village of St Michaels close to the heart of St Albans. The pub is located opposite the entrance to Verulamium Lakes and close to the Roman museum. The Rose and Crown has a classic beamed bar with a huge inglenook and is renowned for both it's chatty and welcoming atmosphere and some of the best real ales around. The lunch time menu includes excellent gourmet sandwiches, a must to try are "Porky Pig", "Clarke Gable" and "Gobble Gobble", all served on fresh white farm house or granary bread. The evening menu provides excellent pub food with everything from homemade chili con carne to fish and chips, all available in large helpings. Why not sit in the fully walled and established garden under the willow tree watching the world go by. The Rose and Crown is long established as a music venue with regular music nights catering for music tastes from folk to jazz as well as the best in local rock and acoustic lineups.

Very Decent Duo Woodface on Mon 10th Mar 08
Woodface played a very good range of cover versions, (including some of my faves from Crowded House & Squeeze) & they mixed it up well with some older songs (Beatles, Stones) together with some more modern covers (such as Snow Patrol, Kaiser Chiefs).
The singer/guitarist had a nice mellow voice, & sung all the songs very well, and the other guy seemed very good on bass & also seemed equally at home on the keyboard for certain songs. Only slight criticism would be that I thought the drum backing tracks they used were a little loud & overpowered the vocals & guitars, but it's only a minor criticism, as on the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed the songs they played & would definitely go & see them again if they play in St Albans.

New Blue Out of the Blue on Mon 24th Sep 07
Out of the Blue returned to the Rose & Crown after a summer break. They haven't been idle - they've been recruiting a new guitarist. What a find: laid back, versatile and creative. Obviously a good summer.
It's a shame the punters didn't turn out, just the few of us indoors and a crowd out in the garden; apparently the band sounded just as good out there.
I recognised a few numbers from their last time here, but also a few new ones including a Bobby Bland number (something to do with "Imagination", that I'm sure I've heard as a soul number - but here given a heavier feel with the Albert King-ish bass riff).
Their "southern rock" numbers like "Let's Work Together" are infectious, but they also play some low-down blues like "Blues Before Sunrise" with lots of dynamics and excellent vocals and lead guitar.
All-in-all a band to be watched out for, I'm glad to hear they're back at the Rose & Crown in December, and I gather they're playing at a newish venue in Newgate Street next Tuesday.
If you missed them on Monday then catch them next Tuesday!

Do WHAT to the Farrier? Deaf Shepherd on Sat 16th Jun 07
What do you expect from a Sheps gig? Let's see...
1). Busy? Check. - the pub was heaving...
2). Hot? Check. - not a dry garment in the house
3). Loud? Pardon? Would someone please pick up that phone!
4). Seriously quality rock covers, delivered with energy and humour? Most certainly.
The band are, without doubt, on top form and a force to be reckoned with. The addition of some new material was great to hear and the songs fitted in perfectly to being 'shepherdized'.
If anyone is in any doubt about the quality of the Herts music scene, this lot prove that we are truly lucky to be able to nip down the local boozer and catch such quality musicianship, all for the price of a shandy or two.
The Rose and Crown should be applauded too, whilst not every pub can sustain a band as loud (or as popular) as the Sheps, the staff were superb as usual and getting a drink was no problem at all - we all needed it, as it was HOT in there!

Flocktastic Deaf Shepherd on Sat 5th May 07
Maybe it's a good sign when you turn up to a venue and they've removed nearly all of the furniture. The extra space was heaving by 10 o'clock, and frankly no-one looked comfortable. This is the price of local success: no doubt Bad Company's original stomping ground in the frozen wee pubs of Fife suffered the same swipe from this double edged sword. The band, of course, lapped up the extra attention, and they deserved it. The Sheps create a huge sense of sociability, and the sound they make is quite awesome. Great gutsy singing, agile rock/blues electric guitar, powerhouse bass and drums and The Legend cleverly hiding behind his rack of 17 guitars, mandolins, things with two heads and a podule.
When the smoking ban comes in this July, occasions like this will suddenly become much safer. I'd hate to be caught in the stampede for the tiny exit if mister Big Guy's cigar ever set fire to my eyebrows. Which, given the human density formula of last night, and the state of my eyebrows, could have been a real possibility.
