Success Bar 62, St Albans on Thu 14th Feb 08
The Runaway Boys are an enigma. Boys they certainly are - none of them look to be over twenty - and possibly that is why they play rock'n'roll so in-the-spirit, all verve and attack, hack and slash; but they are informed by a mature sensibility which allows them to wander into no-no land and come out carrying prizes. "Summertime"? As rock'n'roll? Yes! It really works. The standards are in there too, but you would hardly call them 'covers'. And who told them about "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight," by Earl Vince and the Valiants (or Jeremy Spence of Fleetwood Mac)? Come on, whose Mum told you about that? Or have you been at the B-sides again? Well done, either way.
Well done Bar 62 also. The mixed crowd was, truthfully, peppered with those perplexing souls who take up static space near the band when there are dozens of music-lovers around who would like to be closer to the noise, but overall the band was an ideal choice for a young Valentine's Night turnout. The booking policy is well-tuned. Shame you can't move the gents' toilet away from the musical performing area - shy types get double stage-fright - but, well, in rock'n'roll sometimes you just have to walk the walk, eh?!
St Albans really is fortunate to have bands and venues of this quality - and in quantity, too - and the crowds to support them. It can't be totally coincidental that the UK's biggest (by far) music listings website is based here. Wow - a St Albans scene! In a pub near you!

As I walk along, I wonder... The Robin Hood, St Albans on Sun 13th May 07
... who on earth do The Runaway Boys think they are? Here is the largest display of be-quiffed, be-bop, be-my-baby rock & roll songs from a set of monstrously attractive youngsters you are ever likely to see and hear. Their genre is well travelled - a rhythmic mix of great 50s and 60s singalong/jivealong hits from Elvis, Billy Fury, Cliff, Eddie Cochrane, and loads of other guys my dad told me about - but their lively presence is as new as this morning. Great enthusiasm, great playing (how anyone can learn all that 'fiddly' electric guitar at the age of 18 (?) is beyond me), great standing up on the upright bass (that must have taken a lot of Pilates lessons...) and these 3 guys LOOK the part too, with black & white togs, floppy ties and the odd hat. Yes, you get older, tighter, more authoritative bands playing rock & roll, but I've never been so involved with the music as with the Runaways... unique, unpretentious, uninhibited, and vastly under-known... for the moment anyway.
