Diverse! The Dufflebags on Fri 18th Apr 08
Once again we were in the company of the Dufflebags last night. One of the best bands we have here at the Showman. As always there was something new to the set & this time this included some great cover versions so the set not only pleased the lovers of their original written stuff but also held the crowd of music fans who like to hear what they can sing along to. Last nights sound was superb , well engineered. As a bonus the Old Porch Boys filled in the breaks & started off the night too. A great acoustic sound with fiddle , mandolin , double bass , various guitars & to top it all their very own tap dancer ! Well done guts.

Original sound The Dufflebags on Fri 5th Oct 07
The Dufflebags are a band who write and perform their own material. 99% of the songs are written by the talented Chris Davies with some assistance from the other band members, it's a team effort and this you can tell from the way the sound fits together so well.
From memory the instruments consist of Mandolin, Mandocello, acoustic guitars times two, electric guitar, electric bass and drums.
The songs have individual melodies and if you listen to the words they make sense. We at the Showman have always been keen on bands who can perform their own material and positively encourage bands who are capable of this. The Dufflebags are one of the best original acts on the circuit today, they perform with a genuine love for the music coming first and the financial gains are second.
Great act that comes highly recommended, a folky sound with superb voices and great lyrics.

Great afternoon Slippery Dick & J Y Kelly on Sun 30th Sep 07
Well done to JY Kelly & Slippery Dick for once more dragging the customers here down to their level for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. The music was in fact very good, the acoustic works well, the singing suited too, in fact I think Mike could get away with no amplification at all with the power in that massive voice of his. Concrete overcoat? Good old mandolin saved the day.

Impressive performance! Ocean 6 on Fri 28th Sep 07
It's been a while since I wrote a review here but this band did such a good job it seemed that just paying them wasn't enough. Ocean 6 are a new 6 piece band consisting of Lead & rhythm guitars, bass, drums, mandolin, keyboards and congas. It's so refreshing to have a band in who have practised to the point of near perfection with their music and style, they have a real pride in what they do and this is portrayed during the set. A well balanced sound (not too loud) with no member trying to out do the other so far as volume goes, the result is that each part of the band can be heard and listened to with ease. The vocal talent of Paul, the singer is well accomplished, each song was performed word and pitch perfect and that's another thing that sets this act apart from many others. The set was made up of songs from each era, from the 60's to present day featuring songs from the Kinks to the Kaiser Chiefs... Something for everyone! Although each member of the band is an accomplished musician there was not a "pop star" attitude coming from any of them. Each part of the band gelled with every other part to produce a pleasing and entertaining mix of great music. Paul has bundles of talent and just as important, a nice little bit of chat to go with it.
It wasn't a night of song after song being belted out with no interaction with the crowd; each song had its own introduction, and audience involvement was positively encouraged with customers actually being invited up to sing with the band on some numbers. People were dancing, clapping and cheering from the word go. As far as I know this was the band's first outing on an evening gig but you wouldn't know it from listening to them - the act gave the impression that they have been together for years perfecting the sound.
The tills were ringing all night and they were quite full by the end of the night, so not only will you have a great night of quality music with these guys, but they justify their fee too !
A huge investment of time money and energy has obviously gone in to perfecting Ocean 6. They are a band with a conscience and a pride in what they do.
I have my dates in for 2008 and I would suggest you give these guys a call while they still have room in the diary... it's going to be a busy year for Ocean 6 I'm sure.
I can't believe they were drinking tea all night ! That's rock & roll guys?

|
|
|
| Print 3 flyers per A4 page, with marked cutting guides. Hint: setting your start date to the first of a month, and your end date to the last day of a month, gives a neat heading on your flyer, e.g. setting 1 May 2008 and 31 Aug 2008 as the start and end dates will produce the heading: 'MAY - AUGUST 08'. Try it! You can also set the font size to a decimal value (e.g. 9.3) to make the gigs fit exactly onto the page. | |
