Notes from SmokeStack: "Slow deep blues written and sung by Michael. Recorded at the Combeshead Studios. Nick plays rhythm and lead guitars here. Some reference to SmokeStack's preferred drink, named by Michael 'SmokeStack'(Yes! very original) it's 50/50 mix of vodka and Malibu (Vodka should be Smirnoff Red label) drunk straight from the freezer. If you can't get 'SmokeStack' pure iced vodka will do. Some fans will have sampled this at gigs!"

Value For Money! The Wharf, Tavistock on Thu 5th Apr 07
The Wharf's pageReview edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. I went to The Wharf on 5th April, purely because I love blues and thought I'd give this Blues Night thing a go! Wow! What an evening, it was fantastic. Loads of very talented musicians all taking turn singing or playing, it was a major jamming session. Absolutely fantastic!

Tim Page opened the evening, I've never seen him perform before, but I would really like to see more of him. Blues of the "Old" type, talking Blues. He played his guitar and used a case to keep beat with his feet, it was wonderful and I really hope he will come back to The Wharf on another Blues night.

I've never seen SmokeStack before, but I hope to be seeing a lot more of them. All the members of the band seemed to be enjoying themselves, which is what it's all about. There is certainly some talent out there and I can't wait to see more of it. All this for £2.50! Now that is what I can Value For Money.

[Sat 21st Jun 08] E mails/letters from fans after Ashburton Blues Festiva 'THEY CAME THEY PLAYED, THEY CONQUERED.....
My wife and I came to the Ashburton Blues Festival on Saturday and we had a fantastic day, we came initially to see the Feelgoods as I had not seen them since the seventies, We had not seen Smokestack or heard them before, we were totally blown away when you came on and played your set, with so much energy and great tunes it reminded me of the time I saw Dr Feelgood for the first time about '76.
-Mick

Saturday night was THE BEST. Dare I say SmokeStack knocked the socks off Dr Feelgood! You guys were brilliant.-Judy

There were lots of people at the gig who were saying SmokeStack were far, far, better the Dr Feelgood. And I agree!-Glen
(click for larger picture)[Fri 20th Jun 08] Review from Blues in Britain mag-Ashburton Blues Fest Saturday night openers, Manchester-based Ernie's Rhythm Section, kept
it tight and cool, with more maturity than their youth implied,
before handing the stage over to Devon four-piece SmokeStack.

They kicked every ounce of energy from a stunning set cored round 50's
Chicago. SmokeStack's guitarist Nick Jones's wailing slide cut through
a sell-out audience as front-man Michael Cranmer pushed out kilowatts
of raw energy. They held the crowd in their hands with standards such
as Rufus Thomas's Walkin' the Dog, Sonny Boy's Checking on My Baby,
and segued into the self-penned samba-beat Lost Property Man aided by
guest saxman Steve King's honking horn. They finished their flawless
set with a version of the Van Morrison standard Gloria, which had the
fans howling for more.

It has to be said this was a hard act to follow, and Festival
headliners Dr Feelgood produced some strutting Canvey-Island hardcore
rock, which pushed all the right nostalgia buttons. Honorary Essex-man
Robert Kane (Sunderland, actually) kicked his charismatic way through
old Lee Brilleaux numbers like the Down at the Doctors, Roxette, and I
Can Tell, which had the hall bopping. End of Saturday score:
SmokeStack 5, Dr Feelgood 3 !
[Fri 4th Jan 08] THURSDAY JAN 3, 2008. First... THURSDAY JAN 3, 2008.
First Blues at The Wharf for the New Year! I wasn't expecting much of turnout , with sub-zero temperatures, biting wind and fog over the Moor, but by 9.00pm the place was filling up nicely. Lots of musicians coming to jam, including a bass player all the way from Madrid, and Dmitri from Russia, who did a great acoustic solo set (plus encore).
The band really got into a good groove. For me the highlight was an extended version of 'Spoonful'. Thanks to all our fans, and superb musicians who continue to build the monthly session into 'the' place to be for Blues lovers in the Westcountry.
