Great entertainment on Sat 10th Feb 07
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. rated as one of our top reviews This man's reputation is spreading far and wide. We brought along two friends who had travelled all the way from Cheshire to see this talented man. They were not disappointed. Stompin' Dave's musical skill and enthusiasm have the attention of all those in the pub within 3 songs. His range of music from bluegrass to blues, Irish traditional to Appalachian clog pleases most tastes. His multi-instrumental talents featured guitar, banjo, snare drum, harmonica and those stompin shoes. One minor downside... he forgot to bring his fiddle, but we'll let him off and we'll be back for more soon.

Our friends from Cheshire were still smiling at 12 noon as they drove back t'up north.

Purbeck Beardies shown how to stomp The Square & Compass, Worth Matravers on Sat 2nd Dec 06
Review edited by Lemonrock to improve readability, by consent of the band/artist, or owner of the page. Do you reckon you'd have a good Saturday night, given the following set of circumstances?

- a ridiculously atmospheric, log-fire warmed, ancient stonemasons' pub, (many say the best pub in Dorset) perched at the head of a steep stony valley leading down to the wild Purbeck coast only half a mile away,

- a raging gale blowing in from the Atlantic threatening to tear the pub sign off and fling it all the way to Swanage (but a bright moon glittering on the sea, not a drop of rain),

- an international beer festival featuring drool-inducing lunatic soup from all over the world, plus mulled cider so popular the whole place smelt like a warm apple barn,

- not only a beer festival, but a beard festival - entered into wholeheartedly by the assortment of 60 or so friendly, colourful and creative whisker enthusiasts and drinkers, from two year olds dancing on tables to, well, much, much older types who looked like they may have worked the nearby quarries in their time,

- The south's most dynamic, original, uplifting and entertaining multi-instrumentalist, Mr Stompin' Dave Allen.

Well, I believe I'd be right in saying that every last one of us will remember it as a night of raw, unmitigated musical virtuosity and rhythmic delight and I'll bet every last foot was still tapping furiously to a deeply ingrained bluegrass beat all the next day.

The thing about Stompin' Dave is that, for the first few numbers, if you were busily engaged in your pub banter and not paying too much attention, you could make the mistake of taking him as a musical middleweight; a talented and entertaining banjo player with an eccentric look and playing style, but with no real depth. However, not long after he's started playing, you start to notice that all around the pub people are pricking up their ears, heels and toes are tapping intently and talk ceases; they are gradually falling well and truly under the influence of the infectious and irresistible beat that is the driving force of Dave's wonderful music.

Not only that, give it a couple more songs and you can see it dawning on them that he's put down the banjo and he's since conjured the same primal, mesmerising effect out of his fiddle, his harmonicas, his guitars and most spectacularly the flat, weathered, wooden box on which he tap-dances with the energy and spirit of a dervish (whilst playing said instruments). There is a hell of a lot more to this guy than just decent banjo playing!

Pretty soon, the Square and Compasses' large flag-stone floor was playing host to some seriously uninhibited stomping and gyrating and before too long, the landlords had a full-blown hoedown on their hands - it was great!

The range of styles played on the different instruments gave the audience a variety of grooves to get into, both mellow and frenetic, and I noticed that Dave's solid funk infused rhythm & blues on the acoustic guitar seriously hit the spot.

But for me there was a moment during his first set where, wether the artist was conscious of his effect or not, he had so well and truly hypnotised his entire audience that he'd stripped his song right down to voice, two drumsticks playing against the mike stand and those mesmerising tap shoes on the wooden box - and the room was stomping and pulsing like it was the climax of some tribal ritual.

During the second set, I got the impression that Dave knew this was a bit of a special gig - that the mood was just right and the music going down really well - and he treated us to an impassioned mixture of barnstorming, incendiary traditional banjo numbers interspersed with some very impressive original material. "Lotus flower growing in muddy waters", a simple but lyrically powerful tune, was particularly appreciated.

It's hard to get a solid stone pub rocking, but with incredible musicianship and a huge dose of raw energy, Stompin' Dave Allen managed it on a stormy Saturday night!
