The High Ones[Pop/Rock/Acoustic, 4 piece]
Get the Flash Player to see these images. based around the songwriting core of Nigel Parrington and Mark Lee, The High Ones went from thrashy punk to garage rock via power pop, cutting through the ginnel of lost dreams. Since their early post-pubescent days as a perky punk-pop trio with Sacha Perko beating the crap out of the drums and Mark on bass, they've always served their great songs. Songs played around this time included 'bold' 'birdsong' and 'mushroom man'. During this brief but sweaty era they were also joined briefly by a guitarist Lawrence who provided the link to their following line up. The classic line up from 96-98 of Mark, Nigel, Jim Rennie and Adam Parfitt (plus later Frank Walden on sax) is their most fruitful period. Managed by Frank Miller and supported musically by their guru Bill Johnson-they made some of their greatest music. Their 1st ep 'Another World' in 1996 was what cassettes were made for. Produced by Nick Swannell and the band, this ep became single of the week at Tower Records and was released on Mac MacLaren's seminal Intro Records. The following year produced their greatest release 'northern skies'. Again recorded by Nick Swannell this had even greater songs and a more mature smell. 'Sunny Day' caught on like ebola virus and resulted in a tour of Belgium for the band-their finest and drunkest hour. In 1998 Nigel left the band to live in Belgium after falling for the original High One, Els. Mark followed and in the autumn of 98 they remade The High Ones as an Anglo- Flemish confederation embracing our frite loving neighbours Bert M D'hooge and Cathy Ann. This was in your face garage pop fuelled by ketchup, fritten and wino-strength beer. Three songs were recorded from this time and after much record interest The High Ones' final gig took place in November 98 at the Borderline...it's still talked about to this day, by us. We endeavour to seek out lost recordings (the Sacha years exists!) and any old pics to post up here, and campaign for a plinth in Trafalgar Square.
