THE MUSIC
VtB celebrates the wide musical styles of Van Morrison by playing over 25 songs written or covered by 'The Man'. Examples include the country flavoured 'Bright Side of the Road', the jazzy 'Moondance', the soulful 'Crazy Love', the funky 'Cleaning Windows', the Celtic folk of 'Carrickfergus' and the pop 'Brown Eyed Girl'.
We also recognise the influences on Van's music, e.g. Mose Allison's 'Seventh Son', Bobby Bland's 'Ain't Nothing You Can Do', paying an extended tribute to Sam Cooke during 'Real Real Gone' and playing samples of rhythm'n'blues hits through 'Domino'
VtB can also perform a huge range of soul, Tamla, reggae, funk, blues, rhythm'n'blues and rock hits. Therefore, we can tailor-make the sets to suit different occasions.
THE FORMAT
Originally, and usually, a 7 piece band (including a brass section). built from a nucleus of three musicians.
However, VtB can play confidently in a variety of different formats, including a duo (Mini Van), a quartet with guest players and singers, as suited to the occasion.
EXPERIENCE
Collectively we have a long pedigree in the genres of rock, funk, blues, rhythm'n'blues, pop, soul, reggae and jazz.
VtB individuals have played with the likes of Geno Washington, Rob Manzoli (from Right Said Fred), the Pioneers, Dick Heckstall-Smith, the Kinks, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings and Alexis Korner.
THE HISTORY OF VtB
My starting point was to put together a band of experienced musicians to play a collection of Van Morrison's songs for the musical "Brown Eyed Girl". Written by teacher and playwright Michael Jones and performed at The Compass Theatre, Ickenham, West London in 2002 the show was an immediate hit. We were so enthused about performing Van Morrison's music that we continued building the repertoire and playing as VtB beyond the original project.
A big 'thank you' is due to Denis at The Horns, Watford - one of the first to recognise our potential and give VtB regular gigs.
THE SHOW
The idea is to try to stay true to the original songs rather than replicate Van himself - and this sets us apart from other tribute bands.
There are 2 main vocalists with other members of the band singing solo or providing back up.
The whole emphasis is on fun and enjoyment, as exemplified by the antics of the horn section (in the 7-piece) dancing into the crowd or performing a crazy dance-mime routine.
Come and see us!
Many thanks to Hocus Eye, who caught VtB in action with some great photos at The Horns, Watford in January 2009.
Forthcoming gigs (2 of 2 total): Mon 27th Jul: The Village Hotel, Elstree... Sat 7th Nov: Private Function
