The Shawl, Harlesden
12 Dec 2022The Shawl, Harlesden
Last night's gig at the The Shawl in Harlesden was a bit strange, yet not unfamiliar... Let me explain: it was a VERY cold evening and, having arrived in very good time, the first thing we noticed was that the punters were at that point exclusively male. And there weren't very many of them. Anyway, we got set up and started in the usual way, and we were pleasantly surprised when one middle-aged Irish gentleman in particular seemed to be enjoying our selection of songs greatly, while overall response was fairly positive as well. That guy left during the first interval, but not without complimenting us warmly on what he'd heard. As the evening went on more punters left; it had started snowing, so I assume they wanted to get home before it became too bad. At one point there were only seven in the audience.By the end a nice young couple had come in and, sitting close to the band, were obviously enjoying our stuff greatly, which was gratifying.Anyway, the punch-line is that when the young lady at the bar came to see us at the end of the evening, I said "Bit quiet tonight, eh?" To which she replied "Oh no – this was quite busy! Last Sunday we only had four people in all day!" So I'm guessing that we must have been doing SOMETHING right! Our next gig at time of writing is on Saturday 17th December 2022 at Croydon Irish Association, South Croydon - details on Lemonrock at: https://www.lemonrock.com/gig.php?id=819223Tony Young
The Bodhran, Hendon Central
5 Dec 2022The Bodhran, Hendon Central
Nice gig as usual last Saturday 03/12 at The Bodhrán in Hendon Central. Not overcrowded but a fair few in, including many "usual suspects". Strange thing – it was one of those evenings when clearly everyone was enjoying the music, singing along, tapping feet, even dancing a bit, yet there was little or no actual applause. Hey ho, press on regardless, and Joe, the manager, was happy and kind as usual. We look forward to plenty of further visits here in the New Year and of course I'll post them as and when they come in.Hope to see you at our next gig, which at time of writing is on Sunday 11th December 2022 at The Shawl, Harlesden - details on Lemonrock at: https://www.lemonrock.com/gig.php?id=804863Tony Young
Jameson's Bar, Edgware
20 Nov 2022Jameson's Bar, Edgware
I don't know what it is about Jameson's Bar in Edgware, but on both this and the previous occasion we played there the place has been severely underpopulated, and in this case the few punters in were all male. There was a smattering of polite applause, and we were even able to fulfil a request or two, but with so little overall dynamic the gig was fairly hard work.Don't misunderstand – despite the lack of adrenalin flow it was very far from terrible, and Ewa, the gorgeous guv'nor, was as sweet as ever. Our next gig at time of writing is on Saturday 3rd December 2022 at The Bodhran, Hendon Central - details on Lemonrock at: https://www.lemonrock.com/gig.php?id=814947Tony Young
Power's Bar, Kingsbury
14 Nov 2022Power's Bar, Kingsbury
Strange thing about Power's Bar in Kingsbury, which I've also noticed in a few other venues. We started off with a great response from the audience, including a pleasant and knowledgeable gent sitting at the table nearest to the stage. However, by the middle of the evening it had all gone a bit flat, not helped by one particular shorts-wearing twat with a hipster beard and back-to-front cap who was determined that his voice would be the only thing to be heard in the entire neighbourhood. Talk about empty vessels...Yet as we approached the end of the final set, all of a sudden the by now rather depleted audience rediscovered their enthusiasm and the gig ended most positively. The stage in here is very tiny, but we manage to squeeze onto it, and altogether it's a nice place to play. Seems they're now all booked up to the end of the year but we hope to get some more gigs here in 2023.Our next gig at time of writing is on Saturday 3rd December 2022 at The Bodhrán, Hendon Central (https://www.lemonrock.com/gig.php?id=814947) but we're hopeful of securing other bookings in the meanwhile.Tony Young
