DeLorean are a rare breed. A band of complementary and top notch musicians who are able to deliver AOR to a very high standard. Each member of the band makes a significant contribution to a very professional sounding band with their individual ability and top quality equipment. If you imagine Bon Jovi as a covers band then you have probably got "DeLorean"!
The ingredients are: a fabulous frontman/singer with voice akin to Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Idol - and he can scream as well and looks rock musician (whereas the rest don't...), a lead guitarist with a great sound and ability, a keyboard player who replicates all the sounds exactly, a drummer full of confidence (including drum solo), and finally a slightly too loud bass player ;) - but that's pretty normal in a pub band. In fact, talking of the sound; this was pretty damn good in front of the band and seemed to be monitored by a PA guy. At the back of the pub the guitar and keyboards got a bit lost though.
They kicked off the 1st set with a rather weak choice in my opinion; Bryan Adams - "Run to You", but I guess they wanted to ease the audience in rather than hit us between the eyes. I do feel you should make a statement with the first song though, like saying: "we are here and this is what to expect!". Well actually I knew from their set list to expect better/less cheesy material, and they soon followed up with some Bon Jovi ("It's My Life" I think it was).
Hearing the Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane" was a pleasant surprise for me; it deviated from the more popular 80s rock numbers that formed the core of their set. The material they play is typical of that melodic guitar & keyboard combination rock music typical of the late 80s. It appeals to your sister, your girlfriend, your wife, your mum & dad even! In fact, that seems to sum up the punters in "The Plough & Harrow". (It's not a rock pub as such.) However it lacks the balls of a guitar based hard rock band; like AC/DC for example that your hardened "Rock Pig" might be into. In fact this is probably the only time when DeLorean do not fit the style of the music too well. Both AC/DC numbers (the popular "Whole Lotta Rosie" & "Highway to Hell"), sounded odd really. A bit like Bon Jovi playing AC/DC. But if they want to do it their way, that is fine. It's good to hear a band put their own stamp on the material.
There was so much of their material that was delivered to an excellent standard that you know that other covers bands wouldn't quite manage or even attempt. I was particularly impressed by their "work in progress" as the singer described it, which was in fact the Def Leppard song "Pour Some Sugar on Me". All the detail from the record had been worked out and played to a standard that Def Leppard would have been proud of, even if DeLorean weren't quite happy themselves with it. "One Vision" was another one of many impressive numbers. I was a little disappointed with the middle instrumental section though. There ought to have been some lead guitar work in there to spice it up a bit. The version of "We Will Rock You" they followed it with was superb. I was impressed at the time because I thought it was their own, but now I have checked the set list I see it is probably the "Warrant" version.
They did so many numbers which were just wicked. There is no let up in the quality. It was good to see some flashy lead guitar work, effortlessly executed, and the singer really going for some screams like in "Rebel Yell" (and his voice remained intact! There aren't many singers like this around in pub bands!).
Finally, I would like to mention that I have never given out full marks for a gig before, but these guys fully deserve it, especially when I have seen other bands reviewed with full star rating that clearly aren't at this standard. If you like the look of their set list and like the music, I guarantee that you will not be disappointed with the live rendition.
Keep it together guys.

Monday 25 January 2010Thanks for your very kind comments - we've taken your pointers on board and will be looking to implement a few changes where possible.
With regards to the Bryan Adams opening number - that is actually our soundcheck song but things were a little behind schedule that night so we had to launch from that straight into the main set! D'oh! :-)
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this review and for your compliments. Hopefully we'll have another chance to impress when we return!

My wife and I watched your band at The Angel last Friday - we had such a great time that we felt compelled to write and say - thank you so much. We have your flyer so will keep a look out for more of your gigs! Posted on Deloreanband.co.uk 23/11/09
