Joey The Lips [Soul Funk / Disco, 10 piece]

Starting the evening off with "Gimme Some Lovin" the band ripped through their setlist with hardly a breath taken between numbers! Joey The Lips performed excellent renditions of, "If I were a boy" and "Shout" along with other favourites, like, "Night Fever" , "Soul Man" and "Valerie" and "Take another piece of my heart" before finishing with a final fantastic blast of "Love Shack", complete with a great guitar solo of classic riffs from the past .
This was a great gig from a great band - who managed to give a polished performance despite the inadequacies of the venue, which failed miserably to comfortably or sensibly accomodate both catering and live music at the same time.

It had been a few years since I last saw Joey the Lips play and, boy, have there been some changes, not least of all in the line-up. It did make me a little dubious... For all of a few seconds! Their larger than life front man whipped up the crowd with a witty repartee and plenty of audience participation.
The music was more than expected. I was asked by someone what genre I would put them in and I found the best answer was 'Blues Brothers'. This was still just as true now, bringing in some new songs to join those traditional numbers that got people 'shaking their tail feathers'.
The female vocalists had nicely contrasting voices that provided some outstanding differences in sound when they took on lead vocals, akin to Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera. When backing, their voices harmonised brilliantly.
The musicians all took turns to shine as they had their limelight and each proved their exceptional talents. The melding of all the abilities on stage resulted in amazing performances of songs such as 'Don't Stop Me Now', 'Think', 'Twist It' and a brilliant medley featuring 'Love Shack'.
What made the whole gig such a enjoyable experience was witnessing how much fun the whole band had throughout the entire evening. Plenty of laughter, smiles and silly poses were coming from all over the stage and it was impossible to watch them loving what they were doing and not get caught up in it.
So, it is safe to say that I had an extremely wonderful night, as did all the friends I was with, and I would highly recommend going to see Joey The Lips live whenever you can - they are worth making the effort for!

Friday 24 April 2009Wow, thanks for the review Sarah! Glad you enjoyed it. We've been wondering what genre we're in too! There are about five Blues Bros. tunes in there, but to cover all the set we came up with Funky Soul, Blues & Disco review, which is what's on the new posters. Thanks again, hope to see you soon! Thanks for the great show at The Wharf in Tavistock. First time I have seen you there, the atmosphere was amazing and the crowd covered all age ranges. The TV screen in the bar was a bonus as well as we had a couple of older people who hadn't got seats and couldn't stand the whole way through.
What an amazing set list, it covered all the stuff I expected and a lot more as well. Really liked the version of "Valerie". The only problem I had was knowing who to watch first, you all do so much on stage. Although your saxophone player looked too much like Jeremy Clarkson for my liking.
Can't wait to see you at The Bank in Plymouth later in the month.

The only problem with Joeythelips is that when you're at a gig the time goes way too quickly...
I've been to the Liskeard gig now 3 times after a recommendation from a friend and now plan our nights out around seeing the band.
Truly fantastic version of "Let Me Entertain You" that blows me away each time I hear it - and that comes from a girl who's seen Robbie sing it live ;o) and I like JTL's version more!
Always fun to watch as well as listen to the band and always a guaranteed night of non stop dancing - the bandaoke part of the night is always a giggle too!
If you want a fun night out with some very talented people then go see Joey The Lips - pure entertainment!

What a great night in Dunster last Friday - band as good as ever catering for all the punters' needs.
The weather held out and the wine was flowing. What a venue and entertainment in this postcard village.
Keep up the good work guys - hope to see you at Porlock in August.
