Road Trip [Rock & Roll]

What a refreshing change to see a band who want to offer music lovers something different.
Road Trip might not have played many gigs (and might still be evolving) but these are four highly experienced musicians who are aiming to play the best of rock 'n' roll and rockabilly. And boy, do they play it well! Many of the songs are from the era of the famous Sun Records in Memphis in the mid and late 1950s and that makes Road Trip's playlist extremely engaging.
The Malt & Hops was certainly jumping to this rocking quartet who kicked off Elvis Presley's early hits "Baby What You Want Me To Do" and "You're A Heartbreaker".
Brian C provided the powerhouse vocals on these Sun classics while playing acoustic guitar; but it's lead guitarist Donny Scott who is the real star of this band, whose stylish, skillful guitar playing (in the style of Chet Atkins) is a joy to hear as he recreates music from this golden era.
Ricky Nelson's "Just A Little Too Much", Elvis's "Baby Let's Play House" and Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City" were all highly enjoyable; while the surprise of the first half was Brian's excellent interpretation of the Everly Brothers' gorgeous ballad "Let It Be Me".
The 45 minute first set was soon over but the punters loved it and they were waiting expectantly for the band to return.
Part two began with Lloyd Price's rocking blues classic "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" and it was nice to hear a fairly unusual Eddie Cochran song "Twenty Flight Rock" instead of the
predictable "Summertime Blues". Road Trip also rocked their way through Elvis's first worldwide hit "Heartbreak Hotel", with great work on the fretless bass by Ian M.
Solid drum work was provided throughout by experienced and talented skinsman, Ollie Usiskin.
Other highlights included Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes", Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup's "My Baby Left Me" and the encore, Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti".
Brian performed also a subtle version of the ballad "Love Me Tender" which contrasted well with all the rockabilly.
Road Trip might have just started their journey around local pubs but I think they will soon be in huge demand.
