Franklyn Street are a 5 piece band, who sound more like a 10 piece and great sound abounded at their gig on Sunday. Fronted by Stevie Nicks lookalike, Fran, who has an incredibly wide-ranging, powerful voice backed by keyboard/pianist, Steve, saxophonist, Brian, drummer, Geri and bass guitarist, John. From the first number they hit hard with a series of classic Motown and Stax covers, including "Knock on wood", "Respect" "Nowhere to run" and James Browns' "I feel good" which got the small but appreciative audience up and dancing.
The band included modern soul numbers like Duffy's "Warwick Avenue", Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" and Cee Lo Green's "Forget You"; a version of "Piece Of My Heart" to rival Janis Joplin's classic and an amazing "River Deep, Mountain High".
Fran can REALLY sing and the band are high class musicians. Franklyn Street delivered three 45 minute sets of hot soul music classics. For encores, a rousing version of "Land of a 1000 dances" sung by bass guitarist, John (who also has a powerful soul voice) and finally a totally stunning version of "Proud Mary" à la Tina Turner.
You Wanna dance? Then remember the name, Franklyn Street!
