It's Swell's 21st Birthday!! -- October 2016!!Unbelievably, it was back in the Girl-Spiced, Oasis-Blur Conflict days of the 1990s - yes, some of us actually remember it! - that Swell was born... a passion to bring together original bands in the St Albans area to produce a high-quality CD* that could be packed in a rucksack** and taken to an A & R manager*** in a record company****.19 tracks from 11 bands was a lot to organise: recordings, arrangements, editing, mixing, re-mastering, photo shots, artwork management... how did we find the time with our mad mulleted motorway careers taking the best hours of the day? (Hint: we used the nights).Lemonrock Editor (read my blogs here)----For our younger readers:* a round piece of plastic with a big hole in the middle (no, not a vinyl single) that was a digital version of the real music** an innocent personal portable storage device made from canvas that didn't make people think you were a terrorist*** a guy (or gal) dressed in an expensive suit who got paid to listen to records, sorry - CDs - all day long and rarely ring anyone back**** oh... never mind...----Swell is a glossy package of completely original pop and rock tracks, put together by a top selection of St Albans bands. There's a diverse and endlessly creative music scene in this great City, and Swell captures one particular summer of a seemingly endless wave of new bands and songs. The cover gives a clue to the content; a rich kaleidoscope of pop tunes, rock riffs and dance classics from quality bands. Some artists on the CD have since made it big - notably Coco (Sue Brice) and Sherena Dugani; many are still gigging in London and locally, and others have slipped into something more ambitious and diverse. This is a collector's item, wonderfully recorded and digitally mastered... an inspiring and groundbreaking theme marking one of the country's richest musical landmarks.
